Greene says she got 'a lot' of pushback from White House over Epstein discharge petition

0

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said she got “a lot” of pushback from the White House over supporting a discharge petition aiming to force the administration to release all of the documents related to late, disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“Oh, I got a lot of pushback. I got phone call after phone call last night. They didn’t want me to sign the discharge petition. They want to focus on the oversight investigation. They hate Thomas Massie more than they can hate any Democrat, which makes no sense to me. And they don’t want to work with Democrats at all,” Greene, an ally of President Trump, said during her Wednesday appearance on Real America’s Voice “Bolling!”

Greene, who has disagreed with some of the administration’s positions before, told host Eric Bolling that she does not blame the president, but some of his staff.

“Eric, you and I both know any president is insulated and in a cone of information based on the people that work directly with him, and I don’t think they’ve informed him on what a big deal this really is,” Greene said.

The Georgia Republican, who is one of the four members of the House GOP conference who signed on to the petition spearheaded by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), said she told Trump Wednesday morning to host Epstein’s survivors at the White House.

“I want him to be the hero and champion of this issue,” she said. “And I want him to fight for these women, because I know him to be a fighter.”

Trump dismissed the pressure to release the files regarding Epstein, arguing it is a push to distract from the achievements of the administration.

“But it’s really a Democrat hoax, because they’re trying to get people to talk about something that’s totally irrelevant to the success we’ve had as a nation since I’ve been president,” Trump said on Wednesday.

Greene said Wednesday, “It’s not a hoax, because Jeffrey Epstein is a convicted pedophile. That takes away the whole hoax things. It’s not a hoax. It’s not a lie.”

Lawmakers hosted Epstein victims on Capitol Hill, where they urged Congress to act. Some of the Epstein accusers spoke with members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is conducting its own probe regarding the Epstein case, on Tuesday behind closed doors for over two hours.

House GOP leadership is urging members not to sign onto the petition, which currently has the support of four Republican lawmakers, and to back the investigation done by the Oversight Committee. The panel released a large batch of files it got from the Justice Department after issuing a subpoena for materials related to Epstein. Democrats on the panel said that most of the files have already been made public.

“Helping Thomas Massie and Liberal Democrats with their attention-seeking, while the DOJ is fully supporting a more comprehensive file release effort from the Oversight Committee, would be viewed as a very hostile act to the administration,” a White House official told multiple news outlets this week.

“Every Republican should be able to sign on to this, and that’s the real hoax that they’re afraid to sign on to it, because somebody who, you know, who is a real coward from one of the Trump admin officials, came out and called this a hostile act against the Trump administration,” Greene said. “I take very big offense to that, because I put my life and my fortune on the line fighting to get that man elected.”

Martha’s rule rolled out to all acute hospitals in England

Martha Mills died aged 13 after developing sepsis.

Martha’s rule, a way for families to seek an urgent second opinion if they are concerned about the care their loved ones receive, will be rolled out across all English hospitals delivering acute or short-term treatment.

The telephone helpline, the result of a campaign by the parents of 13-year-old Martha Mills who died after serious failings in her care, has been piloted in 143 hospital sites in England since April 2024.

Figures from NHS England show that since then there have been almost 5,000 calls, resulting in 241 potentially life-saving interventions.

Martha’s mother, Merope Mills, welcomed the expansion on what would have been her daughter’s 18th birthday but wants UK-wide access.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the new figures proved the need for the rule and “a different, more equal kind of doctor-patient relationship”.

Martha Mills, died at King’s College Hospital in London after developing sepsis. Her family’s concerns were not listened to.

In 2022 a coroner ruled Martha would probably have survived if she had been transferred earlier to intensive care and given appropriate treatment

The initiative encourages families, carers and patients to speak up if they notice changes in the patient’s condition and to seek an urgent review from a critical care team if the patient is deteriorating and their concerns are not being listened to.

Under the scheme, clinicians also record daily insights about a patient’s health directly from families.

Staff, including those in junior roles, can also ask for a review from a team independent of the one they work with.

Data from NHS England shows of 4,906 calls to Martha’s Rule helplines, almost three quarters (71.9%) were from families seeking help:

  • 720 led to changes in care, such as new antibiotics or drugs
  • 794 helped address delays in investigations or treatments
  • 1,030 helped resolve communication issues or problems with patients being discharged

Merope Mills said she was delighted more people were going to get access to the rule.

“I think the data proves there is an need for it and has reassured us and clinicians up and down the country that it is already saving lives.

“And more importantly it has highlighted the need for a different, more equal kind of doctor-patient relationship in the country.”

She called for an expansion of the scheme to the rest of the UK, saying it was unfair patients did not have access to it everywhere. She also highlighted a need for it in maternity care.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said he was grateful to NHS staff who have embraced the campaign and “most of all to Merope and Paul and the Mills family for their campaigning efforts”.

He promised to share the latest results with colleagues in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

He said he had “seen and heard similar experiences where mothers were not listened to in maternity services”.

“So I do think that there are common issues here for the NHS to learn from in terms of listening to patients, listening to women in particular, and making sure that we respond in the right way, in the right place, at the right time to avoid harm and in worst cases, fatalities.”

On Radio 4, Ms Mills read out an email she had received from a Today programme listener who believed the life of a child in her family had been saved after calling the hotline.

She read: “I followed Martha’s story on Radio 4, never thinking anyone I knew would need to use Martha’s rule.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done and are doing to raise awareness and to empower people in an environment where we all naturally feel intimidated.”

Ms Mills said while she knows some people feel the word patient doesn’t apply to them: “The reality is we are all, as I know, one disaster away from it being about us…

“It could be your mother, it could be your sibling, God forbid it could be your kid who one day needs this,” she said.

An ongoing full evaluation of Martha’s rule will help inform its possible future expansion into hospitals involved in longer term care, mental health trusts and community settings.

The Welsh Government is introducing a similar scheme, called Call4Concern, which is expected to be rolled out to all hospitals by the end of next year.

The Scottish Government is testing a number of Martha’s rule pilots and considering developing a “more consistent, nationwide approach”.

The department of health in Northern Ireland said it was “committed to improving patient safety” and whilst there were no immediate plans to introduce Martha’s rule there, it would continue to monitor the roll-out and impact in England.

Russ Vought says Government Accountability Office 'shouldn't exist'

0

The director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Russell Vought, said on Wednesday that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) should not exist.

“We’re not big fans of GAO. They are a quasi-legislative independent entity and something that shouldn’t exist,” Vought said while addressing attendees at the National Conservatism Conference in Washington, D.C., according to multiple news outlets

President Trump’s administration and some Republicans have long accused GAO, the office created in 1921, of partisanship.

The GAO says it provides Congress, the leaders of executive agencies and the American public with “timely, fact-based, non-partisan information that can be used to improve government and save taxpayers billions of dollars.”

“Our work is done at the request of congressional committees or subcommittees or is statutorily required by public laws or committee reports, per our Congressional Protocols,” GAO says on its website.

The congressional watchdog has published reports this year stating that the administration’s actions are unlawful, including one in early August, which found that the White House broke the law when it directed the National Institutes of Health to cancel hundreds of research grants.

The GAO is led by a comptroller general, who is appointed by the president and can be removed by Congress.

Gene Dodaro is the current head of GAO, serving in the role since late 2010. The terms are limited to 15 years.

Dodaro said that “clearly Russell Vought does not value transparency and accountability.”

“GAO’s mission is to support Congress in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities. During my tenure as Comptroller General alone, GAO has saved taxpayers over $1.2 trillion and resulted in tens of thousands of improvements to how federal programs work,” Dodaro said in a statement to Politico and Axios.

Stocks Off Their Lows as Wall Street Buys the Dip

After stocks fell sharply in Tuesday morning trading, some on Wall Street smelled a chance to buy the dip.

The Dow was down just 376 points, or 0.8%, after falling more than 500 points. The S&P 500 cut its decline to 1% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.2%.

Magnificent Seven stocks, which were dropping fast earlier, were also off their lows. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF was down to 1.5%.

US Open 2025 results: Jannik Sinner sweeps aside Lorenzo Musetti to set up semi with Felix Auger-Aliassime

Jannik Sinner continued his US Open title defence in dominant fashion as he swept past fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti to reach the semi-finals in New York.

Labelled an “artificial intelligence” player by Alexander Bublik in the last round, Sinner’s scintillating form carried on as he won 6-1 6-4 6-2.

Musetti, ranked 10th, was unable to convert any of his seven break points, while he hit just 12 winners to his compatriot’s 28 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“We know each other very well. We’re from the same country, there’s so many Italian players in the draw, so it’s nice to play here,” Sinner said.

“Obviously playing Davis Cup together and stuff like this you have to take the friendship away, but when you shake hands everything is fine.”

In a ruthless first set, Sinner rattled through the first five games and conceded just five points before Musetti eventually held serve to get himself on the board for 5-1.

Sinner closed out the opener after just 27 minutes, but his momentum slowed in the second set as Musetti stepped up his level.

But the top seed managed to grab the decisive break at 4-4 and served it out comfortably before breaking twice in the third to secure the win just before midnight at Flushing Meadows.

“From my point of view it was a great performance, very solid,” Sinner added.

He has now won 26 consecutive matches at hard-court Grand Slam tournaments.

The 24-year-old will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in Friday’s semi-final after the Canadian defeated Alex de Minaur of Australia.

December trial set for Wisconsin judge indicted over obstructing immigration agents

0

A Wisconsin judge who is accused of helping a migrant evade arrest by federal immigration agents will stand trial in December.

The trial for Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan, who was indicted on two counts in May, had her trial set for Dec. 15 on Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman.

The jury selection is scheduled to take place on Dec. 11 and 12, according to court documents.

Dugan was arrested in April and was indicted in mid-May on two counts: of “knowingly” concealing a migrant wanted for arrest by immigration agents and obstructing the removal proceedings.

Dugan, who was suspended by the Wisconsin Supreme Court in the wake of her arrest, contended that the charges should be dropped, stating that she was acting in her official capacity as a jurist.

Dugan has pleaded not guilty.

In mid-April, the county circuit judge allegedly told immigration agents to head to the chief judge’s office and then allowed the Mexican national, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, and his lawyer to use a non-public door to aid in escaping arrest, prosecutors said.

Flores-Ruiz, who was in the country illegally, was later arrested.

Did Mr. Beast Buy NFL? YouTube Video Explained

0

Will Taylor Swift Perform at Super Bowl Halftime Show? NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Says…

It looks like Mr. Beast didn’t actually take his sports purchase to the endzone.

The YouTuber—real name Jimmy Donaldson—raised eyebrows when he uploaded a video titled “I bought the NFL,” in which he and the organization’s commissioner Roger Goodell spoke at a press conference announcing the news.

“Today marks an historic first,” Goodell said in the clip shared to YouTube Sept. 3. “The NFL is now under the ownership of one individual, Jimmy Donaldson, Mr. Beast.”

And Mr. Beast reiterated the update when he took the podium shortly after, saying, “That is right, I officially own the NFL.”

“I think it’s time for some changes,” he continued. “So, for my very first change, we are going to be changing the roster from 53 players to 54, and giving that new roster spot to a YouTuber.”

The video then cut to several YouTubers such as Haley Baylee, iShowSpeed, Dude Perfect and Brooke Monk being drafted to various NFL teams and attending the squads’ training camps.
