Sources: Red Sox acquire Willson Contreras in trade with Cardinals

0

The Boston Red Sox acquired first baseman Willson Contreras in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, the second big deal between the teams this winter as the Cardinals rebuild and the Red Sox aim to stay competitive in the cutthroat American League East division, sources told ESPN.

Contreras, 33, has been one of the steadiest right-handed hitters in baseball since his debut and will bring his well-above-average glove to a position Boston had spent the offseason trying to fill. The Red Sox will receive $8 million to cover the remaining $42.5 million on the three-time All-Star’s contract and sent right-hander Hunter Dobbins and right-handed pitching prospects Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita to the Cardinals, sources said.

While the Cardinals were not intent on trading Contreras this winter, the opportunity to land a major league-ready starter in Dobbins helped facilitate a deal that came after Sonny Gray waived his no-trade clause to go from St. Louis to Boston in late November. Contreras likewise waived his no-trade clause after receiving an extra million dollars guaranteed through a renegotiation of his contract, sources said.

The amended contract will pay Contreras $18 million in 2026 and $17 million in 2027 with a $20 million option in 2028 that now includes a $7.5 million buyout. (Previously, the deal paid him $18 million in ’26, $18.5 million in ’27 with a $17.5 million option and a $5 million buyout.) Boston had sought a right-handed bat to play first base and fell short in the bidding for free agent first baseman Pete Alonso, who signed with division rival Baltimore.

Though Contreras doesn’t possess the power of Alonso, he has been a tremendously steady hitter since debuting at catcher for the Chicago Cubs in 2016. Over his 10-year career, Contreras has hit .258/.352/.459, and last year, after shifting full-time to first base, he hit .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs.

To get Contreras, the Red Sox dipped into their deep well of starting pitching, sending the 26-year-old Dobbins, who figures to have a spot in St. Louis’ rotation when he returns from a July ACL tear that ended his debut season. Prior to the injury, sustained when covering first base, Dobbins went 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA over 13 outings, allowing just six home runs in 61 innings and striking out 45 against 17 walks.

The 19-year-old Fajardo, who had been traded to the Red Sox a year ago to the day, posted a 2.25 ERA over 72 innings between the Florida Complex League and Low-A Salem this year. A $400,000 signing out of Venezuela, he runs his fastball up to 97 mph and complements it with a changeup and slider.

Aita, 22, was a sixth-round pick out of Kennesaw State in 2024 and finished this year at High-A. Featuring a mid-90s fastball, Aita struck out 99 and walked 30 in 115.1 innings with a 3.98 ERA over two levels.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers contributed to this report.

Frozen Waymos backed up San Francisco traffic during a widespread power outage

0

A power outage struck San Francisco on Saturday that blacked out about 130,000 customers at its peak, according to Pacific Gas and Electric Company, but also caused another problem: stranded Waymo vehicles. Posts all over social media showed the company’s autonomous SUVs sitting still in the streets and causing traffic jams.

Some people posted videos of Teslas using their FSD feature to navigate the same streets, and Elon Musk tweeted that “Tesla Robotaxis were unaffected by the SF power outage.”

In response to an inquiry from The Verge, Waymo spokesperson Suzanne Philion sent a statement saying, “We have temporarily suspended our ride-hailing services given the broad power outage in San Francisco. We are focused on keeping our riders safe and ensuring emergency personnel have the clear access they need to do their work.” PG&E reported as of 7AM PT that “Crews have restored about 110,000 customers and PG&E continues to work on restoring the remaining 21,000 customers, primarily in the Presidio, Richmond District, Golden Gate Park and small areas of downtown San Francisco,” as it continued repairs after a fire at a five-story power substation.

Exactly why the cars weren’t moving remains unclear, with no public updates we could find on the company’s social media channels, but speculation centered on spotty wireless data connections, with cell towers either down or overloaded by people who no longer had access to Wi-Fi, and/or the street lights that weren’t operating without power.

These problems have occurred before, though, as seen in TikTok videos from earlier this year showing Waymos frozen by a malfunctioning street light and during a power outage in Austin, Texas. In a reply to a Reddit post showing another similar situation last year, someone saying they were a former employee commented explaining that the vehicle would send a request to a remote assistant and wait for their response before proceeding.

According to a company blog post, it reaches out to a human response agent when the car encounters “unique interactions,” providing them with live and recorded views from its cameras in addition to a 3D map of what the sensors are picking up. However, those may require bandwidth that’s hard to find during a significant power outage. I couldn’t find any statistics on how many remote assistance operators Waymo has available at a given time, but in November, the company announced it passed a third-party audit by Tüv Süd, a German tech inspection company that evaluated its remote assistance program against industry best practices.

James Ransone, The Wire Actor, Dead at 46

0

A Hollywood star has gone too soon.

James Ransone, who earned recognition for his performance as Ziggy Sobotka on The Wire, died Dec. 19, according to online records from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office viewed by E! News. He was 46.

E! News has reached out to Ransone’s manager for comment but has not heard back.

Following his stint on the HBO series, Ransone scored further TV roles in series like Law and Order, Generation Kill and How to Make It in America. He most recently appeared in an episode of Poker Face earlier this year.

Ransone also found success on the big screen with horror movies including Sinister, The Black Phone and It Chapter Two. But back in 2019, he revealed that he was ready to walk away from his career after becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the entertainment industry.

“I really thought I was going to leave and not do this anymore in 2017, for real,” he told IndieWire at the time. “I was not very happy about certain things that were happening in the business. I was really considering going back to school for theology.”

Fantasy football Week 16 inactives: Status of Tee Higgins, Marvin Harrison Jr. and others

0

Whom should you start? Whom should you sit? To help you set your fantasy football lineups and avoid starting an offensive player who won’t be in the lineup, we’ll post fantasy-relevant updates and analysis here as NFL teams release their official inactives lists.

Official Sunday inactives should begin coming in approximately 90 minutes before the scheduled kickoff times: around 11:30 a.m. ET for the early games and 2:30 p.m. ET for the late-afternoon games.

Refresh often for the latest information.

Week 16 Rankings | Expert chat (noon-1 p.m. ET)

What we’re watching for early

  • Tee Higgins, WR, CIN (concussion): He has yet to clear the league’s concussion protocol, but there’s still time ahead of Sunday’s kickoff. Stay tuned. With Charlie Jones (ankle) out, Mitchell Tinsley could be in line for more targets.

  • Quentin Johnston, WR, LAC (groin): He was limited in practice all week, but still might give it a try on Sunday. Tre’ Harris (hip) was not on the team’s final injury report and could fill in, if needed.

  • Jason Sanders, K, MIA (hip): With Quinn Ewers starting at QB, the Dolphins might need to rely on field goals. However, it’s still unclear as to whether it will be Riley Patterson or Sanders getting the call.

  • Mason Tipton, WR, NO (illness): With Devaughn Vele (shoulder) on IR, the Saints could be down to just the trio of Chris Olave, Kevin Austin Jr. and Dante Pettis at WR.

  • Tyrod Taylor , QB, NYJ (groin): While Taylor says he’s feeling good enough to play, Brady Cook will start again for the Jets. Justin Fields (knee) appears to be farther away from a return than Taylor.

  • Gunnar Helm, TE, TEN (toe): He’s been splitting TE work with Chig Okonkwo and is expected to be in the passing mix on Sunday.

  • Van Jefferson, WR, TEN (back): Tennessee’s primary deep threat is expected to be able to play on Sunday.

Ruled out before Sunday

What we’re watching for late

  • Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, ARI (heel): Michael Wilson is certainly the safer play, but it does appear that Harrison might be able to suit up on Sunday. However, the team is expected to “ease him back in” to action.

  • Xavier Weaver, WR, ARI (hamstring): Andre Baccellia (neck) was placed on IR, leaving Jalen Brooks as the only healthy alternative should Weaver not be able to go.

  • Drake London, WR, ATL (knee): London is expected to play, as is TE Kyle Pitts Sr. (knee) who was not on the team’s final injury report of the week.

  • Nick Chubb, RB, HOU (ribs): Since he practiced in full on Thursday and Friday, chances are good he plays. Woody Marks (ankle) was limited but could also be in the RB mix. Jawhar Jordan could be a sleeper surprise if either other RB sits.

  • Christian Kirk, WR, HOU (illness): Even if he plays, it’s hard to trust any Texans wideout other than Nico Collins.

Sony’s XM5 headphones and the latest Kindle round out this week’s best deals

0

If you’re feeling the stress of having procrastinated on your holiday shopping — and you missed out during Black Friday and Cyber Monday — we’ve got you. We’ve found a variety of gadgets on sale that make for great gifts, many of which will ship in time for the holidays. One of the standouts is the current promo on Sony’s noise-canceling WH-1000XM5 headphones, which are on sale with a free pair of wireless earbuds. Other deals you may have missed include steep discounts on Amazon’s latest entry-level Kindle and the new Echo Dot Max.

Sony’s last-gen WH-1000XM5 have consistently impressed us with their audio quality, active noise cancellation, and comfort. And right now, Amazon is offering them with a free pair of Sony’s WF-C700N earbuds for $248 ($152 off). The headphones have an updated design that includes a thinner headband, more memory foam in the ear pads, and repositioned mics that reduce wind noise when taking calls. These changes didn’t add much weight, and the headphones still get 30 hours of playtime with ANC enabled.

The XM5 sounded “more refined, detailed, and spacious” in our tests, but we noticed less oomph when listening to EDM or hip-hop tracks with a lot of bass. The headphones have eight microphones, four of which are for voice, and their excellent noise reduction on calls was immediately noticeable, even in louder environments. The $89.99 WF-C700N, meanwhile, are a midrange pair of noise-canceling earbuds with an IPX4 rating, up to seven and a half hours of battery life (with ANC enabled), and a slim design.

Amazon’s 11th-gen Kindle is our favorite budget-friendly e-reader, and you can pick up the ad-supported version for $89.99 ($20 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target. The entry-level ebook reader features a six-inch 300ppi E Ink display that won’t show glare from the sun like your phone or tablet. It has enough storage space to hold thousands of books, or dozens of audiobooks from Audible, the latter of which you can play via Bluetooth headphones or speakers.

The Kindle’s built-in battery lasts up to six weeks, depending on how long you read per day and how reliant you are on its backlight, and recharges over USB-C. It has the same screen resolution and storage as the step-up Kindle Paperwhite, but it’s not waterproof, which may matter if you like to read at the beach or in the bath.

Amazon’s last-minute “Super Saturday” sale is underway, though, we’d argue some of the better deals are actually some the lingering discounts we’re seeing on Amazon’s own devices, many of which have been effect for several weeks. Right now, for instance, you can grab the new Echo Dot Max at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target for $79.99 ($20 off), which is the best price we’ve seen on the smart speaker since it launched.

Despite the name, the Dot Max is less of a follow up to the Echo Dot as it is the fourth-gen Echo from 2020. It’s got a compact knit fabric design, simpler controls, a better processor, and more smart home sensors and radios than prior models (it offers support for Matter, Thread, and Zigbee protocols). It still sounds great for its size, though, and like prior models, it can function as an Wi-Fi extender if you’re looking buoy a Eero mesh network. It’s also one of the first devices to offer Amazon’s AI-powered Alexa Plus out of the box, which, while still very much a work in progress, is a step in the right direction.

Lily Allen on Ex David Harbour’s Relationship With Her Kids

0

Lily Allen isn’t getting involved in her daughters’ relationship with her ex David Harbour.

Following the former couple’s breakup in February after four years of marriage, the “Smile” singer—who is mom to Ethel, 14, and Marnie, 12, with ex-husband Sam Cooper—shared that the Stranger Things star still keeps in touch with his stepkids.

But as Lily told The Observer in an interview published Dec. 20, “I stay out of it.”

Indeed, the 40-year-old—who alluded to infidelity in their relationship on her recent album West End Girl—pointed out that her kids are able to stay connected with David, 50, without her involvement.

“They’ve both got phones,” she continued. “They all text each other.”

Shortly after David exchanged vows with Lily in September 2020, he described the positive impact that Ethel and Marnie had made on his life after being “thrust into” a paternal role.

“I’m in a relationship with three women who all have very different opinions of me at various times,” he told People that December. “Making that kind of a commitment, which I haven’t for most of my life, was a huge thing for me. And it just makes you feel a little bit more like a man, to be honest. I just feel a little bit more like an adult.”
