Man charged with cyberstalking murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO's family

0

(NewsNation) — A 40-year-old upstate New York man was arrested Wednesday on federal cyberstalking charges for allegedly sending threatening voicemail messages to a family member of murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in the days following his December killing.

Shane Daley of Galway was charged with cyberstalking after authorities say he made multiple harassing calls between Dec. 4 and 7, 2024, beginning just hours after Thompson was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan.

According to a criminal complaint, Daley placed several calls to a work phone line used by a Thompson family member, leaving voicemails that expressed satisfaction over Thompson’s death and said the victim and Thompson’s children “deserved to meet the same violent end.”

“Daley, as alleged, gleefully welcomed this tragedy and did all that he could to increase the Thompson family’s pain and suffering,” said acting U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III of the Northern District of New York.

The cyberstalking charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and up to three years of supervised release.

Thompson, 50, was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024 in what authorities called a targeted attack. The killing sparked widespread attention and debate over the health insurance industry.

Daley is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart in Albany. The FBI investigated the case.

Sugar Prices Continue Higher After Reports of Lower Cane Yields in Brazil

0

October NY world sugar #11 (SBV25) today is up +0.46 (+2.79%), and October London ICE white sugar #5 (SWV25) is up +11.30 (+2.38%).

NY sugar prices today extended the 3-session rally and edged to a new 2-month high, taking out the previous high posted in mid-July.

Sugar prices are seeing strength on smaller sugar supplies from Brazil.  Covrig Analytics said last Friday that reports of smaller cane yields from Brazil’s sugar farmers may knock Brazil’s 2025/26 sugarcane production below 600 MMT, much lower than Brazilian government crop forecasting agency Conab’s forecast of 663.4 MMT.

An excessive short position by funds could exacerbate any short-covering rally in sugar futures.  Last Friday’s weekly Commitment of Traders (COT) report showed funds increased their net-short positions in NY sugar futures by +25,923 positions to 151,004 short positions in the week ending August 5, the most in almost 6 years.

Last Tuesday, sugar prices fell to 5-week lows on signs of stronger sugar production in Brazil.  On July 31, Unica reported Brazil’s Center-South sugar output in the first half of July rose +15% y/y to 3.4 MMT.  Also, the amount of sugarcane being crushed for sugar by Brazil’s sugar mills has increased to 54% from 50% the same time last year.

The outlook for higher sugar exports from India is negative for sugar prices after Bloomberg reported that India may permit local sugar mills to export sugar in the next season, which starts in October, as abundant monsoon rains may produce a bumper sugar crop.  India’s Meteorological Department reported Tuesday that cumulative monsoon rain in India was 500.8 mm as of August 4, or 4% above normal.  Also, the Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association said last Thursday that it will seek permission to export 2 MMT of sugar in 2025/26.

The outlook for higher sugar production in India, the world’s second-largest producer, is bearish for prices.  On June 2, India’s National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories projected that India’s 2025/26 sugar production would climb +19% y/y to 35 MMT, citing larger planted cane acreage.  That would follow a -17.5% y/y decline in India’s sugar production in 2024/25 to a 5-year low of 26.2 MMT, according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).

Perseids meteor shower lights up night skies

0

Shooting stars from the annual Perseids meteor shower have been lighting up night skies across the UK and around the world over the past few nights. The bright meteors are formed when dust particles fall from the Swift-Tuttle comet and burn up on entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

Astronomers at Astro Dog, a small Scarborough-based astronomy company, captured the event from North York Moors National Park at its peak on 13 August. To maximise their chances of filming the glittering show, they used a camera with a “very sensitive sensor and a large aperture” which was pointed 45 degrees away from the “radiant point” – “where meteors appear to radiate from”. There’s still a chance to catch a glimpse or a video of the Perseids as they will be active until 24 August, according to Astro Dog.

Man who threw sandwich at officer in DC charged with felony

A man was charged with a felony on Wednesday after allegedly throwing a sandwich at a federal law enforcement official amid the uptick in police presence as ordered by President Trump, according to court documents.

Sean Charles Dunn, 37, shouted at a group of U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents on Sunday before hurling a sandwich at one, according to police.

“Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!” Dunn reportedly yelled.

He started pointing at the officers while calling them “fascist,” the complaint alleges.

Onlookers videoed the incident and caught him throwing a sub sandwich at officers on camera.

After hurling the food at the officers, Dunn attempted to run away but was chased by police.

He was charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers or employees, according to a court filing.

“He took a Subway sandwich about this big and took it and threw it at the officer. He thought it was funny,” U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said in a video response to the incident on the social platform X.

“Well, he doesn’t think it’s funny today because we charged him with a felony, assault on a police officer, and we’re going to back the police to the hilt. So there, stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else.”

UK cases of mosquito-borne chikungunya virus more than double

0

There has been a significant increase in the number of UK cases of a mosquito-borne virus that can cause sudden fever and joint pain and is normally only found in Africa and southern Asia.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says more than 70 cases of the chikungunya virus were reported in the first six months of this year, more than double than in the same period last year – all of them linked to travel.

Chikungunya, while rarely fatal, can leave people experiencing joint pain for years.

The UKHSA is warning travellers to take precautions against mosquito bites.

In most cases, people recover fully within a couple of weeks, but for some, pain can persist for months or even years.

In very rare cases it can be fatal.

While the 73 infections seen in the UK in the first six months of this year is not a huge number, it is more than double the 27 cases over the same period last year.

An outbreak of the virus is under way in the Indian Ocean region, and almost all of the infections were linked to travel in India, Sri Lanka and Mauritius.

Chikungunya is spread by two types of mosquito, neither of which are present in the UK, so there is no risk on onward infection.

But Dr Philip Veal, Consultant in Public Health at UKHSA, says it is a warning to travellers to make sure they take precautions against mosquito bites.

“Chikungunya can be a nasty disease and we’re seeing a worrying increase in cases among travellers returning to the UK.

“It is essential to take precautions against mosquito bites when travelling.

“Simple steps, such as using insect repellent, covering up your skin and sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets can greatly reduce the risk.

“Before you travel, check the Travel Health Pro Website for the latest advice on your destination.

“A chikungunya vaccine may also be considered for those travelling to higher-risk regions.”

The same report also says the first ever UK cases of Oropouche virus, normally only found in Central and South America and the Caribbean, have also been detected in travellers returning from Brazil.

This virus is predominantly spread by midge bites rather than mosquitos, with the main type of midge involved in transmission not found in Europe or the UK.

Symptoms include high fever, chills, headache, joint pain and muscle aches.

The UKHSA warns of a rise in Oropouche virus infections globally since 2024, and says pregnant travellers should take particular care following some concerns about the impact the virus can cause during pregnancy.

Newsom announces 'Liberation Day' event in gerrymandering fight

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Wednesday confirmed that he and other local Democrats would hold a high-profile press conference geared towards combating the legislative effort to add five additional House seats in Texas.

“Donald Trump is about to have a very bad day,” Newsom wrote in a Wednesday post on X.

The president previously told reporters that Republicans were “entitled” to additional seats and said the FBI “may have to” go after Democratic lawmakers who fled the Lone Star State to ensure a vote approving the measure didn’t pass.

Newsom, Gov. JB Pritzker (D-Ill.) and Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.) have been working alongside state legislatures to develop a plan to add additional guaranteed Democratic seats in the House through redistricting.

The process requires states to change their constitutions or bylaws to allow for redistricting outside of a census year, when congressional maps are typically redrawn.

“DEMOCRATS WILL DESTROY [Texas Gov.] GREG ABBOTT’S ‘TOTALLY RIGGED MAPS.’ TREMENDOUS WORK IS BEING DONE.  DONALD TRUMP (THE CRIMINAL PRESIDENT) GET READY FOR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PAYBACK YOU’VE EVER SEEN!!!” Newsom’s official press office account wrote on X

“COULD BE THE WORST DAY OF YOUR LIFE AS YOUR PRESIDENCY ENDS (DEMS RETAKE CONGRESS!). AMERICA WILL BE LIBERATED — ‘LIBERATION DAY’ MANY ARE CALLING IT!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!” the statement added.

The conference is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Thursday and will include members of the California legislature.

Newsom penned a letter to Trump on Monday pressing the president to have Texas and other red states stop their mid-decade redistricting efforts, saying “you are playing with fire, risking the destabilization of our democracy, while knowing that California can neutralize any gains you hope to make.”

“If you will not stand down, I will be forced to lead an effort to redraw the maps in California to offset the rigging of maps in red states,” he added. “But if the other states call off their redistricting efforts, we will happily do the same.”

Newsom’s office gave Trump until Tuesday evening to reply to the letter, but Trump failed to respond.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Reveal Their Green Flags for Each Other

“A huge green flag,” Taylor noted, “is that Travis has had the same friends since he was probably 4 years old. And he’s incredibly good at maintaining friendships and he’s so loyal and his friends are equally loyal.”

And after bonding with his pals in the NFL box at Arrowhead Stadium, she added, “They’re the funniest most hilarious group of people.”

And Taylor’s game day behavior impressed Travis, too.

“You wanna talk about green flags?” he quipped. “The first game she went to, the Bears game, she literally went through the front door of the stadium, though general admission.”

”That move immediately convinced him she was down to become part of Chiefs Kingdom: “I was just like, ‘Oh, she’s just in it. She’s down for the ride. She’s here for the fun.’”
