Mets trade Jeff McNeil to Athletics for minor league pitcher

0

The Athletics have acquired utilityman Jeff McNeil from the Mets in a trade that continues New York’s offseason roster overhaul and adds a veteran presence to the Athletics’ deep lineup.

The Mets, who will receive minor-league right-hander Yordan Rodríguez in the trade, are also sending $5.75 million to the Athletics to help cover McNeil’s $15.75 million salary for the 2026 season. New York also agreed to pay McNeil’s $2 million buyout if the A’s don’t exercise his $15.75 million club option for 2027.

McNeil, who turns 34 in April, was drafted by the Mets in the 12th round in 2013 and didn’t make his major-league debut until his age-26 season in 2018. He quickly became a valuable contributor, winning the 2022 National League batting title and making two All-Star teams in his eight seasons in New York. He slashed .243 with 12 home runs and a 111 OPS+ in 122 games last season while logging innings at five different positions plus designated hitter, giving New York a steady contributor in the batter’s box and a versatile, though regressing, defender.

But the Mets, determined to improve their defense after a catastrophic campaign, decided the left-handed-hitting McNeil was not part of the puzzle for 2026 after acquiring Marcus Semien to play second base and signing Jorge Polanco to play first base this offseason.

With Brett Baty the likely candidate to start at third base and Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio, and Luisangel Acuna — all on vastly cheaper salaries — rounding out the infield depth chart, McNeil became expendable in a winter that has already seen fellow Mets fixtures Edwin Diaz, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo join new teams.

Before Monday’s trade, McNeil was projected to primarily play left field after Nimmo was traded to the Texas Rangers for Semien. Now the Mets could give that job to Carson Benge, a heralded prospect, or acquire a veteran to replace Nimmo. Free agent Cody Bellinger is among the options the Mets have considered adding this offseason, sources told ESPN.

In Sacramento, McNeil figures to play second base while lengthening a potent lineup that already features American League Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers, Tyler Soderstrom, Brent Rooker, Jacob Wilson and Lawrence Butler. The Athletics, who are looking to improve on their 76-86 record in 2025, have only made one other notable addition this offseason, signing veteran reliever Mark Leiter Jr. to a one-year contract.

McNeil underwent a procedure to address thoracic outlet syndrome shortly after the Mets’ season ended. He’s expected to be ready for spring training.

For McNeil, the Athletics gave up the 17-year-old Rodríguez, who signed out of Cuba for $400,000 in January. He pitched in eight games, including one start, in the Dominican Summer League for his first professional experience, posting a 2.93 ERA with 20 strikeouts to eight walks across 15 1/3 innings.

The 60 Minutes report on CECOT that Bari Weiss censored is now internet contraband

0

Yesterday, Bari Weiss, the new editor-in-chief of CBS News, censored a segment of its newsmagazine 60 Minutes about men who had been deported to an El Salvador prison. Today, it’s popping up online.

60 Minutes had already begun promoting the now-censored segment online. Because it was pulled so late, it seems that CBS missed at least one platform for distribution: Canada’s Global TV. Some people used a VPN to watch it; at least one person recorded it, distributing it through an iCloud account.

The segment, which has been reviewed by The Verge, is a little shy of 14 minutes long. It features video of men, chained and bent double, being “paraded in front of cameras, pushed onto buses, and delivered to CECOT,” according to the segment’s narration. One former detainee, who CBS met in Colombia, said he was told he was “the living dead” at CECOT. After trying to seek asylum in the US, he says he was detained by customs and held for 6 months before being deported. He described horrific conditions at the prison, saying he was beaten until he bled and that he was thrown into a wall so hard he broke one of his teeth. He also described sexual assault by the guards. Another interviewed former detainee described what can only be called torture: being forced to kneel for 24 hours, and being put in a dark room, where they were beaten if they moved from the stress position.

“In my view, pulling it now, after every rigorous internal check has been met, is not an editorial decision, it is a political one.”

The men were among those who had been deported to El Salvador, a country they are not from. The Trump administration has sent at least 288 people, mostly Venezuelans and Salvadorans, to CECOT after the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, offered to house prisoners for a fee. Many of the people who were deported were awaiting asylum cases, according to The New York Times. It is perhaps the most horrific and breathtaking abuse of human rights from the Trump administration, and a vital area for continued reporting.

The Trump administration has more deals like the one with CECOT in the pipeline, worth “millions of dollars,” according to the segment. The US may begin deporting people to places they have no relationship with, such as South Sudan and Uganda, which also have “well-documented histories of torturing prisoners.”

The story, in addition to breaking news about the deals with other countries, appears to be thoroughly reported, and both the US Department of Homeland Security and El Salvador were given opportunities to comment.

“Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices,” wrote Sharyn Alfonsi, the reporter whose segment it was, in an email to colleagues yesterday, according to The New York Times. “It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now, after every rigorous internal check has been met, is not an editorial decision, it is a political one.”

Because the order to kill the story came so late, CBS didn’t successfully replace the original program everywhere that had been set to deliver it

The story had gotten through all the usual approvals, including Weiss, who suddenly changed her mind. She demanded additional reporting, “including an on-camera interview with a member of the Trump administration,” according to The Washington Post. The story was killed on Saturday night, and the promotional material was removed on Sunday. Weiss sent an edit note saying, among other things, that the segment did not adequately explain the administration’s rationale for sending people to El Salvador.

The notes do not seem unreasonable — except in their timing, which is belated and bizarre, practically calculated to cause an uproar. And, it seems, because the order to kill the story came so late, not every distributor replaced the program.

Weiss was placed in charge of CBS News by David Ellison as part of a fairly obvious attempt to placate the Trump administration and allow his company, Skydance, to acquire CBS parent company, Paramount. President Donald Trump has repeatedly whined about CBS — and 60 Minutes’ work in particular. Just before the takeover by Skydance, Paramount paid $16 million to settle a lawsuit Trump filed over the editing applied to an interview with Kamala Harris.

Ellison’s Skydance is now attempting to buy Warner Bros. in a hostile bid.

Weiss claimed on an editorial call on Monday that she “held that story because it wasn’t ready,” according to The Washington Post. The team had given the White House a chance to comment, and the Trump administration declined, according to the Post. “If the standard for airing a story becomes ‘the government must agree to be interviewed,’ then the government effectively gains control over the 60 Minutes broadcast. We go from an investigative powerhouse to a stenographer for the state,” Alfonsi wrote in her email.

Anyway, best of luck to Weiss in playing DMCA whack-a-mole with the video of the story. The segment lives as online samizdat now. Thanks to Weiss’ censorship, it may very well wind up being the most-talked-about CBS News story this year.

Wake Up Dead Man is the latest whodunnit film in the series, taking place in a Catholic church with Josh O’Connor as its protagonist (and 2025 hot priest) Father Jud. Even though it was only recently released on Netflix, it already has a massive fandom.

Everyone is loving this film—from detective murder mystery fans to Catholics obsessed with the recent pop culture renaissance (pun intended). So, if you have someone like this in your life and you’re scrambling to get them something for the holidays, we’d picked the best gifts that capture the vibe of Wake Up Dead Man.

We’re talking a fangirl-approved Benoit Blanc mug, Agatha Christie books that inspired writer-director Rian Johnson, framed movie posters, the classic mystery-solving board game Clue, a Blu-ray of their fave Pope movie, and so much more.

Sources: Red Sox acquire Willson Contreras in trade with Cardinals

0

The Boston Red Sox acquired first baseman Willson Contreras in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, the second big deal between the teams this winter as the Cardinals rebuild and the Red Sox aim to stay competitive in the cutthroat American League East division, sources told ESPN.

Contreras, 33, has been one of the steadiest right-handed hitters in baseball since his debut and will bring his well-above-average glove to a position Boston had spent the offseason trying to fill. The Red Sox will receive $8 million to cover the remaining $42.5 million on the three-time All-Star’s contract and sent right-hander Hunter Dobbins and right-handed pitching prospects Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita to the Cardinals, sources said.

While the Cardinals were not intent on trading Contreras this winter, the opportunity to land a major league-ready starter in Dobbins helped facilitate a deal that came after Sonny Gray waived his no-trade clause to go from St. Louis to Boston in late November. Contreras likewise waived his no-trade clause after receiving an extra million dollars guaranteed through a renegotiation of his contract, sources said.

The amended contract will pay Contreras $18 million in 2026 and $17 million in 2027 with a $20 million option in 2028 that now includes a $7.5 million buyout. (Previously, the deal paid him $18 million in ’26, $18.5 million in ’27 with a $17.5 million option and a $5 million buyout.) Boston had sought a right-handed bat to play first base and fell short in the bidding for free agent first baseman Pete Alonso, who signed with division rival Baltimore.

Though Contreras doesn’t possess the power of Alonso, he has been a tremendously steady hitter since debuting at catcher for the Chicago Cubs in 2016. Over his 10-year career, Contreras has hit .258/.352/.459, and last year, after shifting full-time to first base, he hit .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs.

To get Contreras, the Red Sox dipped into their deep well of starting pitching, sending the 26-year-old Dobbins, who figures to have a spot in St. Louis’ rotation when he returns from a July ACL tear that ended his debut season. Prior to the injury, sustained when covering first base, Dobbins went 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA over 13 outings, allowing just six home runs in 61 innings and striking out 45 against 17 walks.

The 19-year-old Fajardo, who had been traded to the Red Sox a year ago to the day, posted a 2.25 ERA over 72 innings between the Florida Complex League and Low-A Salem this year. A $400,000 signing out of Venezuela, he runs his fastball up to 97 mph and complements it with a changeup and slider.

Aita, 22, was a sixth-round pick out of Kennesaw State in 2024 and finished this year at High-A. Featuring a mid-90s fastball, Aita struck out 99 and walked 30 in 115.1 innings with a 3.98 ERA over two levels.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers contributed to this report.

Frozen Waymos backed up San Francisco traffic during a widespread power outage

0

A power outage struck San Francisco on Saturday that blacked out about 130,000 customers at its peak, according to Pacific Gas and Electric Company, but also caused another problem: stranded Waymo vehicles. Posts all over social media showed the company’s autonomous SUVs sitting still in the streets and causing traffic jams.

Some people posted videos of Teslas using their FSD feature to navigate the same streets, and Elon Musk tweeted that “Tesla Robotaxis were unaffected by the SF power outage.”

In response to an inquiry from The Verge, Waymo spokesperson Suzanne Philion sent a statement saying, “We have temporarily suspended our ride-hailing services given the broad power outage in San Francisco. We are focused on keeping our riders safe and ensuring emergency personnel have the clear access they need to do their work.” PG&E reported as of 7AM PT that “Crews have restored about 110,000 customers and PG&E continues to work on restoring the remaining 21,000 customers, primarily in the Presidio, Richmond District, Golden Gate Park and small areas of downtown San Francisco,” as it continued repairs after a fire at a five-story power substation.

Exactly why the cars weren’t moving remains unclear, with no public updates we could find on the company’s social media channels, but speculation centered on spotty wireless data connections, with cell towers either down or overloaded by people who no longer had access to Wi-Fi, and/or the street lights that weren’t operating without power.

These problems have occurred before, though, as seen in TikTok videos from earlier this year showing Waymos frozen by a malfunctioning street light and during a power outage in Austin, Texas. In a reply to a Reddit post showing another similar situation last year, someone saying they were a former employee commented explaining that the vehicle would send a request to a remote assistant and wait for their response before proceeding.

According to a company blog post, it reaches out to a human response agent when the car encounters “unique interactions,” providing them with live and recorded views from its cameras in addition to a 3D map of what the sensors are picking up. However, those may require bandwidth that’s hard to find during a significant power outage. I couldn’t find any statistics on how many remote assistance operators Waymo has available at a given time, but in November, the company announced it passed a third-party audit by Tüv Süd, a German tech inspection company that evaluated its remote assistance program against industry best practices.

James Ransone, The Wire Actor, Dead at 46

0

A Hollywood star has gone too soon.

James Ransone, who earned recognition for his performance as Ziggy Sobotka on The Wire, died Dec. 19, according to online records from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office viewed by E! News. He was 46.

E! News has reached out to Ransone’s manager for comment but has not heard back.

Following his stint on the HBO series, Ransone scored further TV roles in series like Law and Order, Generation Kill and How to Make It in America. He most recently appeared in an episode of Poker Face earlier this year.

Ransone also found success on the big screen with horror movies including Sinister, The Black Phone and It Chapter Two. But back in 2019, he revealed that he was ready to walk away from his career after becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the entertainment industry.

“I really thought I was going to leave and not do this anymore in 2017, for real,” he told IndieWire at the time. “I was not very happy about certain things that were happening in the business. I was really considering going back to school for theology.”

Fantasy football Week 16 inactives: Status of Tee Higgins, Marvin Harrison Jr. and others

0

Whom should you start? Whom should you sit? To help you set your fantasy football lineups and avoid starting an offensive player who won’t be in the lineup, we’ll post fantasy-relevant updates and analysis here as NFL teams release their official inactives lists.

Official Sunday inactives should begin coming in approximately 90 minutes before the scheduled kickoff times: around 11:30 a.m. ET for the early games and 2:30 p.m. ET for the late-afternoon games.

Refresh often for the latest information.

Don’t forget to check these out: Mike Clay’s Playbook | Week 16 Buzz
Week 16 Rankings | Expert chat (noon-1 p.m. ET)

What we’re watching for early

  • Tee Higgins, WR, CIN (concussion): He has yet to clear the league’s concussion protocol, but there’s still time ahead of Sunday’s kickoff. Stay tuned. With Charlie Jones (ankle) out, Mitchell Tinsley could be in line for more targets.

  • Quentin Johnston, WR, LAC (groin): He was limited in practice all week, but still might give it a try on Sunday. Tre’ Harris (hip) was not on the team’s final injury report and could fill in, if needed.

  • Jason Sanders, K, MIA (hip): With Quinn Ewers starting at QB, the Dolphins might need to rely on field goals. However, it’s still unclear as to whether it will be Riley Patterson or Sanders getting the call.

  • Mason Tipton, WR, NO (illness): With Devaughn Vele (shoulder) on IR, the Saints could be down to just the trio of Chris Olave, Kevin Austin Jr. and Dante Pettis at WR.

  • Tyrod Taylor , QB, NYJ (groin): While Taylor says he’s feeling good enough to play, Brady Cook will start again for the Jets. Justin Fields (knee) appears to be farther away from a return than Taylor.

  • Gunnar Helm, TE, TEN (toe): He’s been splitting TE work with Chig Okonkwo and is expected to be in the passing mix on Sunday.

  • Van Jefferson, WR, TEN (back): Tennessee’s primary deep threat is expected to be able to play on Sunday.

Ruled out before Sunday

What we’re watching for late

  • Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, ARI (heel): Michael Wilson is certainly the safer play, but it does appear that Harrison might be able to suit up on Sunday. However, the team is expected to “ease him back in” to action.

  • Xavier Weaver, WR, ARI (hamstring): Andre Baccellia (neck) was placed on IR, leaving Jalen Brooks as the only healthy alternative should Weaver not be able to go.

  • Drake London, WR, ATL (knee): London is expected to play, as is TE Kyle Pitts Sr. (knee) who was not on the team’s final injury report of the week.

  • Nick Chubb, RB, HOU (ribs): Since he practiced in full on Thursday and Friday, chances are good he plays. Woody Marks (ankle) was limited but could also be in the RB mix. Jawhar Jordan could be a sleeper surprise if either other RB sits.

  • Christian Kirk, WR, HOU (illness): Even if he plays, it’s hard to trust any Texans wideout other than Nico Collins.
