Lionel Messi unlikely to miss 2026 World Cup – Nicolás Otamendi

Benfica defender Nicolás Otamendi has said he doesn’t expect Argentina teammate Lionel Messi to miss the 2026 World Cup.

Messi was the most valuable player at the last World Cup but has yet to confirm if he intends to play in next year’s tournament.

“Obviously, as the World Cup gets closer, he will make his decision,” Otamendi said of Messi to Radio La Red. “But I don’t see Leo [Messi] missing out on the World Cup.”

Messi, who turned 38 on Tuesday, is currently competing at the FIFA Club World Cup with Inter Miami. He will face his former club Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Otamendi, who has played alongside Messi in the national team since 2009, remains hopeful that the Argentina captain will feature in a sixth World Cup.

“Leo is Leo, the best player in soccer history,” Otamendi said. “Right now, he’s living in the moment. He’s enjoying the Club World Cup. Leo’s focus is on continuing to compete, taking it month by month and seeing how he feels.

“He will make his decision based on how he feels physically, but you will never take away Leo’s desire to compete, to be there, to help the team. It’s in his DNA. Leo is different,” he added.

The Argentine has scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 13 league appearances for Inter Miami this season and was voted the MLS player of the month in May.

Messi’s crowning glory for Argentina came at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where La Albiceleste bounced back from a surprise 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in their opener to win the tournament.

The veteran striker followed that triumph with another by leading Argentina to the 2024 Copa América. Argentina have already qualified for next year’s World Cup that will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Because the deliberations were not shown in the episode, fans were just as perplexed as to how the women came to their jaw-dropping decision. And even after leaving the villa, Hannah was still scratching her head as to why the vote went the way it did.

‘Fireball’ reported across Southeastern US

Scientists said a fireball was seen blazing across the sky on Thursday was the result of a burning meteor.

The meteor was first seen at an altitude of 48 miles above the town of Oxford, Ga., moving southwest at 30,000 miles per hour around noon Eastern time, according to Bill Cooke from NASA’s Meteoroid Environments Office at the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

People across the Carolinas and Virginia caught a glimpse of the imploding object earlier in the afternoon.

“It disintegrated 27 miles above West Forest, Georgia, unleashing an energy of about 20 tons of TNT. The resulting pressure wave propagated to the ground, creating booms heard by many in that area,” Cooke said in a Thursday statement.

The fireball was produced by an asteroidal fragment 3 feet in diameter, weighing over a ton, according to the scientist.

“At this time, we do not have any information on where the meteor may have landed,” Newton County sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Redwood Materials is giving old EV batteries a second life as microgrids

Redwood Materials is repurposing old EV batteries into energy storage systems that cost “substantially less” than brand new storage projects, the company said Thursday.

The electric vehicle battery recycling and manufacturing venture, which was founded by Tesla’s former chief technologist, has created a new division called Redwood Energy to manage these projects. The aim is to divert “depreciated but functional” EV batteries from the recycling stream and repurpose them into “low-cost, large-scale” energy storage systems that can help plug critical gaps in the energy grid.

Redwood says it receives over 20 GWh of batteries annually — the equivalent of 250,000 EVs— which represents about 90 percent of all lithium-ion batteries and battery materials recycled in North America. And often times, the batteries it receives for recycling still have a lot of usable energy capacity — up to 50 percent. These are batteries that are no longer suitable to power an electric vehicle, but still have enough life in them to serve some purpose.

So rather than recycle those still functional batteries, Redwood is turning them into stationary storage systems. And the company says this will be a growing opportunity as more EV batteries reach the end of their lifespan. Redwood estimates that more than 100,000 EVs will come off the road this year alone.

After recovering the battery packs, Redwoods engineers perform a diagnostics check to determine whether its a suitable candidate for recovery or recycling. If its reusable, the pack is installed into “flexible, modular storage systems” which can operate independently or connect to the grid. Redwood says it has “over a gigawatt-hour” of reusable batteries in its pipeline, a number it expects to grow by 5 GWhs in the coming year.

Redwood has already deployed its first microgrid powered by upcycled EV batteries. The grid, with 12 MW of power and 63 MWh of capacity, is located at the company’s campus in Nevada and is being used to power a 2,000-GPU modular data center for AI infrastructure company Crusoe. Redwood calls it the “largest second-life battery deployment in the world” with enough energy to power “9,000 homes, support 20 Amtrak trips between New York and Washington, D.C., or charge an EV for a 240,000-mile journey—the distance to the moon.”

Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 by JT Straubel. In addition to breaking down scrap from Tesla’s battery-making process with Panasonic, Redwood also recycles batteries from Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Specialized, Amazon, Lyft, Rad Power Bikes, Lime, stationary storage facilities, and others. The company also produces anodes and cathodes, critical battery components, at a facility in South Carolina.

Championship fixtures: Wrexham begin season at Southampton

Wrexham will begin their first Championship campaign in over 40 years away at former Premier League side Southampton.

After becoming the first-ever side in English football to achieve three consecutive promotions, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny’s Wrexham face a difficult start to life in the second tier with an away trip to Millwall and games against Sheffield Wednesday and West Bromwich Albion in their opening five games.

Birmingham City, who are co-owned by former NFL star Tom Brady, face Ipswich Town in the Championship curtain-raiser on Aug. 9. The League One champions then take on Blackburn Rovers, Oxford United, Leicester City and Stoke City in their first five games.

Wrexham host Birmingham on Oct. 4 in a fixture dubbed “The Hollywood derby.” The return fixture on April 11 at St. Andrew’s could potentially have promotion implications.

Elsewhere, newly promoted Charlton host Watford on the opening weekend while Sheffield United will look to bounce back from their playoff final disappointment against Bristol City under new manager Rubén Sellés.

The relegated Premier League sides — Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich — will all be targeting swift returns to the top flight. Leicester will be expected to start well as they take on Championship strugglers Oxford United and Preston North End in their first five before an intriguing clash with Frank Lampard’s Coventry City on Sept. 20.

Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich face a challenging start to their promotion push as they will play Birmingham, Southampton and Sheffield United in their first five fixtures.

Southampton start the new season under new manager, Will Still, 32, who will have to contend with trips to Ipswich and Watford after hosting Wrexham to start his first season in English football.

The first South Coast derby of the season between Southampton and Portsmouth takes place on Sept. 13 at St. Mary’s with the return fixture set for Jan. 24 at Fratton Park.

The first East Anglian derby is carded for Oct. 4 as Ipswich welcome rivals Norwich to Portman Road.

Jane said during her testimony that parts of Ventura’s November 2023 lawsuit—which was ultimately settled—mirrored her own experience with Combs.

“I almost fainted, in fact, I think I did,” she told jurors as she cried. “There was three specific  pages that was just a harrowing reference to what I was experiencing.” 

Jane, who took part in “hotel nights, “said that it felt like she was reading “her own story.” It led to her confronting Combs via text messages.

“I feel like I am reading my own sexual trauma,” she wrote after Ventura’s lawsuit, in screenshots shown in evidence. “I am sick. It’s exactly word for word, drug-filled days and nights. You knew this was coming. You gaslit me, you made me go crazy.”

“I am disgusted, I felt forced to perform back to back,” the messages continued. “You made me feel crazy about the sex trauma I was feeling. I feel very violated. This was sexual exploitation.”

Combs subsequently called Jane and recorded the conversation without her knowledge that was entered into evidence, in which he told her that they “did these things together” and that “this is when” he needed her “to be there.”

Jane, who didn’t know she was being recorded, told Combs that she was “sick” to her stomach after reading Ventura’s documents.

Trump economic advisor warns of recession if 'big, beautiful bill' is delayed

Stephen Miran, chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisors, warned Thursday about the economic implications of not passing President Trump’s domestic policy bill by the deadline given by the White House.

While in discussion with NewsNation’s Blake Burman on “The Hill,” Miran suggested the U.S. could face a recession if Congress fails to pass the “big, beautiful bill” by July 4.

Markets, companies and CEOs are currently confident in Congress’s ability to get the legislation over the finish line, “but if that confidence starts to ebb, that will seep into the economy,” Miran warned. “If people start to think, ‘Hey, this thing is dragging on,’ we might have a $4 trillion tax hike. They hold off on investments, they hold off on hiring, they put off economic decisions.”

He continued, “And that’s really, really bad, because then the economy slips into recession because they expect that tax hike.”

When pressed by Burman on whether he was predicting there would be a recession if the bill isn’t passed or the deadline is pushed back, Miran responded, “Oh, absolutely.”

“Look, you don’t implement the biggest tax hike in history, because Congress fails to do its duty and then expect the economy not to go into a recession,” he continued.

Miran suggested that “millions of people” could lose their jobs, and nine million could lose their health insurance if the “big, beautiful bill” fails or the deadline is pushed back.

“It would be a disaster. And so, everybody knows the absolute imperative to get this bill over the line,” Miran added.

Some economists are suggesting the Senate version of the bill may not live up to its promises for economic growth and fiscal responsibility, however. Some tax experts say tax-cut provisions meant to aid working Americans will have little, if no, effect on growth. And with all tax cut extensions factored in, the bill could end up costing between $4 trillion and $5 trillion over 10 years.

The White House has been adamant about passing Trump’s massive reconciliation package by July 4.

“We expect that bill to be on the president’s desk for signature by July Fourth,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday. The House has already passed its version of the bill, which is now waiting for passage in the Senate. It will need to be approved again by the House before Trump is able to give it his signature.
