Sir Andy Murray: British Wimbledon tennis legend says social media is damaging as he backs Katie Boulter

0

“Athletes across all sports have been discussing this for a long time, but it hasn’t really changed. Hopefully something can get done soon.”

Asked for his view – as both an ex-player and father-of-four – about what could be done to eradicate toxic abuse, Murray said: “If I’m being honest I don’t know. Me and my wife are trying to keep our children off social media until they are much older, because I think it can be pretty damaging.”

Murray’s eldest child is nine, while his youngest is four. Many social media apps have a minimum age of 13 for users.

Technology firms will have to do more to protect young people from harmful content under the Government’s Online Safety Act. It is being introduced in phases and social media platforms are now obliged to protect users from illegal or harmful content, while more child safety measures are being introduced next month.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told the BBC the government will also explore whether further protective measures can be put in place on social media platforms.

Figures provided by data science firm Signify, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) show that in 2024, about 8,000 abusive, violent or threatening messages were sent publicly to 458 tennis players through their social media accounts.

Following Boulter’s comments, fellow tennis players demanded more action, including calls for the introduction of identity verification.

Several of the England women’s football team also plan to give up social media for their forthcoming European Championship defence in Switzerland.

Murray said: “I don’t know whose responsibility it is, I don’t know if the government needs to do more to tackle it, or [X owner] Elon Musk and people like that can do more to stop these messages getting through to individuals.

“I don’t mean just athletes, but then you get into the whole debate around free speech and it’s a difficult one.”

Murray also said athletes could help themselves “by trying to avoid looking at the comments and going on our phones immediately after matches”, but the onus was not on them to solve the problem.

Former British tennis player Naomi Broady, 35, told BBC Radio 5 Live about her experiences of abuse on social media, saying: “I’ve seen the worst of trolling and after I had children, I don’t show their faces any more.”

Nadler endorses Mamdani, comparing his win to Obama: Report

0

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) has endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City after the 33-year-old state legislator stunned former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in the Democratic primary on Tuesday.

Nadler likened Mamdani’s victory to that of former President Obama’s in 2008, calling it a “seismic election.” The endorsement was first reported by The New York Times.

In the primary, he had endorsed Scott Stringer, a former city comptroller who is projected to finish far down in the ranked-choice contest. He praised Mamdani as someone who could help the left stand up to President Trump.

“Voters in New York City demanded change and, with Zohran’s triumph, we have a direct repudiation of Donald Trump’s politics of tax cuts and authoritarianism,” he told the Times.

The endorsement of Nadler, one of the most prominent Jewish leaders in New York City, comes after Mamdani faced repeated questions during the primary about his forceful criticisms of Israel and its war in Gaza. Some have accused him of antisemitism, a statement that Mamdani has emphatically rejected.

“I’ve spoken to him today about his commitment to fighting antisemitism, and we’ll work with all New Yorkers to fight against all bigotry and hate,” Nadler said, according to the Times.

Other members of New York’s Democratic delegation, however, have been slower to back Mamdani, who surged from a distant underdog in the polls to the presumptive Democratic nominee for mayor (the final ranked choice vote will be tallied July 1).

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who did not endorse during the primary, both congratulated Mamdani on Wednesday but stopped short of endorsing him.

“He ran an impressive campaign that connected with New Yorkers about affordability, fairness, & opportunity,” Schumer tweeted.

Other New York congressional Democrats, including Reps. Tom Suozzi, Adriano Espaillat, Gregory Meeks and Ritchie Torres, chose to back Cuomo instead.

“I had serious concerns about Assemblyman Mamdani before yesterday, and that is one of the reasons I endorsed his opponent. Those concerns remain,” Suozzi tweeted Wednesday.

Apple’s more immersive CarPlay is dividing the auto industry

0

Apple’s next-generation CarPlay is splitting the auto world down the middle. Several automakers are eagerly lining up to adopt the newly immersive CarPlay Ultra, which takes over more screens and includes embedded vehicle features like speedometers, heating and cooling, and radio functions. Others are flatly refusing to allow it, while the rest are taking a wait-and-see approach.

Here’s where each of the automakers currently stands on CarPlay Ultra:

We’re still missing some big ones, like Volkswagen and Toyota, two of the biggest automakers in the world. I’ve reached out to both and will update this post if I hear back.

CarPlay Ultra is a huge challenge for the auto industry. Multiple surveys show that customers love it, frequently use it over their car’s embedded systems, and would be less likely to buy a future vehicle that didn’t allow CarPlay. But automakers are spending huge sums of money on developing next-generation software systems that allow over-the-air updates and address their customers’ appetite for more digital services. And they’re reluctant to just let Apple slap their own software on top of that.

Sources tell the Financial Times that automakers are eager to set clear standards about data sharing with Apple before agreeing to allow CarPlay Ultra.

Sources – Fred VanVleet plans to sign new $50M deal with Rockets

0

Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet intends to sign a two-year, $50 million contract to stay with the franchise, with a player option in 2026-27, sources told ESPN.

The Rockets are declining VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option for next season, the sources said, and now secure a new deal with VanVleet’s representative, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul.

VanVleet’s new deal gives the Rockets flexibility over the next year and gives him the opportunity to enter the 2026 free agency market where there will be more salary cap space for teams. Both sides believe in a partnership for years to come beyond the two years, sources said.

VanVleet, 31, returns to a Rockets roster recently bolstered by the blockbuster trade for 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant.

It’s been a busy offseason for the Rockets, who also agreed to a three-year, $39 million extension with center Steven Adams and a long-term extension with coach Ime Udoka in recent weeks.

VanVleet, a one-time All-Star and former NBA champion (2019 with the Toronto Raptors), has helped spearhead the Rockets’ turnaround from lottery team to playoff contender in his two seasons with Houston.

An immediate fit after signing a three-year deal with the team in the summer of 2023, VanVleet helped Houston improve from 22 wins to 41 in his first year. The Rockets then won 52 games to grab the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference this past season, ending a four-year postseason drought.

He averaged 14.1 points in the 2024-25 season, his fewest in a season since 2018-19, but averaged 18.7 points per game in the playoffs. The Rockets were ousted in the first round by the Golden State Warriors in seven games, but that wasn’t because of VanVleet — he averaged 24.3 points on 56% shooting and 64% on 3-point attempts in the last four games of the series.

VanVleet is a hard-nosed defender who succeeds on offense through playmaking and volume 3-point shooting — he was second on the team in 3-point attempts per game this past season with 7.7. He tends to struggle with efficiency, however, and shot below 40% from the field in 2024-25 for the fourth time in his career.

The nine-year veteran has averaged 14.9 points and 5.7 assists in his career.

Kelly Ripa Reacts to Lola Consuelos’ Relationship

0

Kelly Ripa has given Lola Consuelos’ relationship her stamp of approval.

As the LIVE with Kelly and Mark host recently revealed, Lola and Cassius Kidston‘s romance has even bonded their families.

“I love him,” Kelly—mom to Lola, 24, Michael, 28, and Joaquin, 22, with Mark Consuelos—said on the June 25 episode of her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast. “I love his family, we are very close.”

Kelly also told Lola, who joined her for the episode, “His mother and I have a lot of conversations about you two.”

While Lola has kept much of her relationship with Cassius private, she offered rare insight into their years-long romance.

“We met on vacation,” Lola shared on the podcast. “But we did not like each other when we first met each other.”

“I say this to everyone that I meet,” she added. “That I think the reason we don’t find ourselves truly arguing that much is because we kind of got it all out of our systems when we first met each other.”

Wandsworth neighbour jailed for doorbell camera abuse and threats

Drina Gray had “engaged in a campaign of harassment” against the young couple living in the flat above hers

A woman who shouted threats to get her neighbours “killed” through their doorbell camera has been jailed for three years and four months.

Kingston upon Thames Crown Court heard that Drina Gray had “engaged in a campaign of harassment” against the young couple living in the flat above hers.

The 52-year-old from Wandsworth, south-west London, left her victims feeling trapped and frightened to be at home, the court was told.

Sentencing Gray on Wednesday, Judge Peter Lodder KC said she made her neighbours’ lives “hell”, having “persistently harassed them morning, noon and night”.

Incidents included damaging their front door camera repeatedly, shouting and swearing and making threats such as “watch your back and that’s a warning” and “I can get you [expletive] killed”, the court heard.

Victim Ben, who owns the upstairs flat, said he had found the threats “terrifying” and experienced suicidal thoughts, and he is now on medication to manage anxiety and depression.

Ben and Emma told the BBC that their neighbour had been making life a “misery” earlier this year

In a statement read to the court, he said he was forced to stay with friends and family, struggled to sleep, had nightmares and ultimately lost his “peace of mind, health and job”.

Addressing the defendant, Judge Lodder KC said: “You made lives of your neighbours hell.

“You persistently harassed them morning, noon and night. Despite orders being obtained to seek to prevent you from behaving in the way you did, you continued in your campaign.

“It may well be you were under influence of alcohol but that is not an excuse, that is an aggravation, and it is no consolation at all to the people you were threatening with extreme violence.”

The court heard Ben and Emma were put through “hell”

Speaking outside court after the sentencing, Ben and his partner Emma smiled and hugged, telling the BBC they feel “incredible” and “as though the fight was worth it”.

“It has been such a long and drawn-out battle,” Ben said, adding their “resilience and resistance” had paid off.

“Finally, we can relax for the first time in two years.”

Ben told the BBC earlier this year that he felt ignored by the authorities.

He added that they were “totally let down by almost every system that we felt was there to protect us”.

The court case took place on the day that the Housing Ombudsman for England told the BBC that some social landlords were failing victims of anti-social neighbours.

The judge said that, as well as alcohol use, other aggravating factors were the fact the victims were in their own home, and Gray’s 18 previous convictions relating to 40 offences.

In mitigation, defence lawyer Tammy Sher said Gray had experienced problems with alcohol for a long time, and in 2023 had been involved in two road accidents which had affected her physical and mental health and caused her alcohol use to spiral.

In a letter read out to the court, Gray said she regretted her actions and she had been going through a period of poor mental and physical health.

Gray was sentenced for four charges, including of harassment, criminal damage, and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with the intent of causing harassment, alarm or distress, spanning six months in 2024.

She also failed to comply with a Community Protection Notice, which was dealt with by another court.

‘Changes are being made’

The court was told Wandsworth Council, which owns the flat Gray lived in, has started eviction proceedings, and that Gray has no intention of going back to the property.

The judge also granted a restraining order, in place for 10 years, banning her from going within a mile of the victims’ address and from contacting them directly or indirectly.

Wandsworth Council said it was “continuing to seek possession” of Gray’s property.

Aydin Dikerdem, cabinet member for housing, said: “We accept that we could have acted more swiftly, and following this case changes are being made to our anti-social behaviour case management system to ensure the appropriate actions are taken more promptly and that complainants are kept updated.”

The Labour councillor added: “Council officers have met with the individuals affected to discuss what further support could be provided.”

Southern California fitness influencer killed in 'act of unimaginable violence'

0

FONTANA, Calif. (KTLA) – New details are emerging in a shocking double slaying outside a sushi restaurant in California’s San Bernardino County over the weekend that was heard by an off-duty deputy, who then shot and killed the gunman.

The violence unfolded on June 22 in a strip mall parking lot in the 15200 block of Summit Avenue in Fontana just after 9:30 p.m.

Gloria Zamora, a 40-year-old fitness influencer and mother of seven, was on a date with her boyfriend, 43-year-old Hector Garduno, a father of four daughters himself, when the couple was fatally gunned down by Zamora’s estranged husband, 45-year-old Thomas Albert Tamayo Lizarraga, Fontana Police told the Los Angeles Times.

Investigators said Lizarraga targeted Zamora’s boyfriend first before turning the gun on her.

An unidentified SBSD deputy who heard the gunfire and rushed to the scene in his vehicle spotted the 45-year-old man running away. Bringing his vehicle to a stop in the street, the deputy confronted Lizarraga before fatally shooting him.

Zamora and Garduno were rushed to the hospital where they both succumbed to their injuries.

The deadly attack came just weeks after Zamora said on a multi-episode podcast that she planned to leave her husband, Sandra Mitchell of Nexstar’s KTLA reported.

In a GoFundMe organized by her daughter Jazlynne Zamora, the 40-year-old fitness trainer and model, who had amassed nearly 160,000 followers on her Instagram account, was described as an inspirational beacon for other women, someone who reminded them of their strength and potential.

“My mom was senselessly taken from us. She was murdered by my stepdad Tomas, in an act of unimaginable violence,” Jazlynne wrote. “She leaves behind 7 beautiful children, ages 8 to 24, who are now facing a future without our mother’s warmth, guidance and unconditional love.”

In a GoFundMe organized by Yesenia Garduno, Hector Garduno was described as a devoted, loving, and hardworking father who did everything he could for his family and four daughters.

“His passing has left a hole in our hearts and a void in our lives that can never be filled,” Yesenia said.

Investigators said the gun believed to have been used by Lizarraga was recovered at the scene and booked into evidence.

The Trump Phone no longer promises it’s made in America

0

When the Trump Organization launched the Trump Mobile wireless carrier, it also launched a flagship phone called the T1 Phone 8002 (gold version). One of the phone’s main selling points was that it was to be made in America. We figured that was unlikely to be true. And we were right: sometime in the last several days, the Trump Mobile site appears to have been scrubbed of all language indicating the phone is to be made in the USA. (Like, for instance, the huge banner on the homepage that says the T1 is “MADE IN THE USA.” Just to name one example.)

Instead, the Trump Mobile website now includes what can only be described as vague, pro-American gestures in the direction of smartphone manufacturing. The T1’s new tagline is “Premium Performance. Proudly American.” Its website says the device is “designed with American values in mind” and there are “American hands behind every device. Under Key Features, the first thing listed is ”American-Proud Design.“ None of this indicates, well, anything. It certainly doesn’t say the device is made in the USA, or even designed in the USA. There are just… some hands. In America.

That’s not the only thing that appears to have changed about the phone since its launch last week. It was originally advertised to have a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, but now the T1’s site says it’s 6.25 inches. The site used to list the phone as having 12GB of RAM, and now doesn’t list RAM at all. It’s not entirely clear what’s happening here — the Trump Organization hasn’t responded to a request for comment — but it looks like Trump Mobile may have switched suppliers for the T1. Whatever’s going on, it’s certainly another reason to doubt whether this phone is for real. (The badly Photoshopped image of the phone hasn’t changed, though, so that’s something.)

When Trump Mobile first launched, it was also promising the T1 Phone 8002 would ship in September. Now, the only timing I could find was “later this year.” Probably best not to hold your breath.
