Florian Wirtz: Liverpool win transfer race for Germany star

0

Liverpool have broken their transfer record for the signing of Germany international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, the club announced on Friday.

ESPN previously reported the deal to be worth a total of £116 million ($156.27 million) — it includes an initial £100 million payment with £16 million in add-ons.

Wirtz has signed a five-year deal with the Premier League champions, a source told ESPN. His shirt number is expected to be announced later in the summer.

“I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me,” Wirtz said in a Liverpool statement. “This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.

“I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

The deal has seen Arne Slot’s side ward off stiff competition from Bayern Munich and Manchester City to land the highly rated attacker — he was ranked No. 2 on the ESPN 100 list of attacking midfielders.

Wirtz, who registered 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen, becomes Liverpool’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Wirtz’s former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong.

The 22-year-old had been expected to remain in Germany next season, either staying put at Leverkusen or joining Bundesliga rivals Bayern. However, the 22-year-old opted to join Liverpool weeks after Slot’s side lifted the Premier League title.

“I would like to win everything every year!” Wirtz said of his ambitions at Liverpool. “First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work.

“In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”

Wirtz is highly thought of at Anfield having demonstrated the ability to play in a variety of attacking positions for both club and country. He had been earmarked at City as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, who left on a free transfer and joined Napoli.

However, sources told ESPN that following conversations with Leverkusen and Wirtz’s representatives, City opted to walk away from the negotiating table, with a source telling ESPN that club bosses did not view the deal as financially viable.

Iran will consider diplomacy when Israeli aggression stops

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (centre) met European diplomats in Geneva on Friday

Iran has said it will not resume talks over its nuclear programme while under attack, hours after Israel’s defence minister warned of “prolonged” conflict against the Islamic republic.

Exchanges of fire continued on Friday, as Iran fired another salvo of missiles at northern Israel, and Israel targeted dozens of sites in Iran.

Israel’s foreign minister, Eyal Zamir, said in a video address that his country should be ready for “a prolonged campaign” and warned of “difficult days ahead.”

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi met with European diplomats in Geneva who urged him to revive diplomatic efforts with the US over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

But Araghchi said Iran was ready to consider diplomacy only once Israel’s “aggression is stopped”.

He went on to say that Iran’s nuclear programme was peaceful, and that Israel’s attacks on it are a violation of international law, adding that Iran will continue to “exercise its legitimate right of self-defence”.

“I make it crystal clear that Iran’s defence capabilities are non-negotiable,” he said.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN accused Iran of having a “genocidal agenda” and posed an ongoing threat, adding that Israel would not stop targeting nuclear facilities until they were “dismantled”.

Trump: Iran doesn’t want to speak to Europe

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran had a “maximum” of two weeks to avoid possible US air strikes, suggesting that he could take a decision before the 14-day deadline he set on Thursday.

“I’m giving them a period of time, and I would say two weeks would be the maximum,” Trump told reporters.

He added that the aim was to “see whether or not people come to their senses.”

The US president was also dismissive of the talks between Araghchi and foreign ministers from Britain, France, Germany and the EU.

“Iran doesn’t want to speak to Europe. They want to speak to us. Europe is not going to be able to help in this,” Trump said.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that the US had provided “a short window of time” to resolve the crisis in the Middle East, which he said was “perilous and deadly serious”.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said “we invited the Iranian minister to consider negotiations with all sides, including the United States, without awaiting the cessation of strikes, which we also hope for”.

Barrot added that “can be no definitive solution through military means to the Iran nuclear problem” and warned that it was “dangerous to want to impose a regime change” in Iran.

As the Geneva talks took place, the exchange of fire between Israel and Iran continued.

Israel was hit by a new round of Iranian strikes with the Israeli military reporting an attack of 20 missiles targeting Haifa.

One Israeli woman died of a heart attack, bringing the Israeli total since the conflict began to 25.

The Israel Defense Forces said it attacked ballistic missile storage and launch sites in western Iran.

Over the last week, Israeli air strikes have destroyed Iranian military facilities and weapons, and killed senior military commanders and nuclear scientists.

Iran’s health ministry said on Sunday that at least 224 people had been killed, but a human rights group put the unofficial death toll at 639 on Thursday.

Iran has launched hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel in response to the air strikes.

Braun says he has ‘no interest’ in White House bid

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun (R) sought to tamp down a report that he is interested in running for president, in remarks to reporters Thursday.

“That’s had nothing to do with anything I’ve said,” Braun told the Indiana Capital Chronicle, a nonprofit news site covering state government, in response to a question about a potential presidential run. “I’m concentrating on being governor, and have no interest in that.”

Politico reported in early June that Braun had discussed the idea of mounting his own presidential campaign, citing three unnamed Republicans close to the governor.

Braun previously served as a U.S. senator for one term, and in Indiana’s statehouse from 2014 to 2017.

He maintained that his focus was on the governorship, the Indiana Capital Chronicle reported.

“I’m focused on being the most entrepreneurial governor we’ve got in this country,” Braun told the outlet. “We’ve been doing things bolder than what most states would do and going after tough issues like health care, education, workforce.”

Braun recently appeared at an event with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., that announced that Arkansas, Idaho and Utah would no longer permit soda and candy to be purchased with food stamps.

As governor, he has also issued a number of executive orders, ranging from declaring there are only two genders to prohibiting collective bargaining among state employees.

After that, David and Jake talk through some big news in the TV world: namely, that TV is dying faster than anyone expected. They discuss the ongoing rise of both Netflix and YouTube, the underrated success of FAST networks, and what this all means for Hollywood as a whole. Former Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews signing with hometown Jets

0

Jonathan Toews plans to sign with his hometown Winnipeg Jets when free agency opens July 1, the team announced on social media Friday.

Toews’ deal will be for one year with a base salary of $2 million, plus several performance-based bonuses, sources told ESPN. The longtime Blackhawks captain, who led Chicago to three Stanley Cups, will return to the NHL after missing the past two seasons to deal with inflammatory and immune system issues.

Toews, 37, chose Winnipeg from a handful of teams perusing him because he has a deep desire to win again; the Jets are the reigning Presidents’ Trophy winners but were ousted in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Dallas Stars.

Toews stepped away from hockey in 2023 when the Blackhawks announced they did not intend to re-sign the captain after his eight-year contract expired. Chicago also traded away Toews’ longtime teammate Patrick Kane as the franchise turned the page to a different era and a full rebuild. Toews was limited during his final two seasons in Chicago as he dealt with the effects of chronic inflammatory response syndrome and long COVID.

In November 2024, Toews posted to social media about a five-week “healing journey” he took in India in which he said he was “happy to say things are trending.”

Toews has ramped up training over the past several months in preparation for an NHL comeback.

The No. 3 pick of the 2006 NHL draft, Toews also helped Canada win gold at back-to-back Olympics in 2010 and 2014. The two-way center scored 883 points (372 goals, 511 assists) in 1,067 career games with Chicago. During the league’s centennial celebration in 2017, Toews was named one of the NHL’s 100 greatest players, along with Kane and Duncan Keith.

Steps star Ian ‘H’ Watkins has been honoured at the British LGBT Awards.

Best known for his time in the 90s pop band, the singer was recognised for his work organising pride events and his advocacy for same-sex parents.

Watkins is the founder of Cowbridge Pride in Glamorgan, Wales and puts on the annual event to raise funds for local causes related to the LGBTQ+ community.

He told the BBC receiving the honour was an “emotional” moment.

He said: “Tonight is a really important night, all nights like this, because it’s a celebration and there’s lots of heart. There’s real people, there are real stories.

“I think people have to remember that when everybody goes home and they take their glam rags off, that’s when the real work starts.”

Actor Billy Porter, best known for his role as Pray Tell in Pose, also received a special award on the night, in recognition of his work on stage and screen and for raising awareness of HIV prevention.

Speaking in 2021, when Porter confirmed he was living with HIV, he said he had kept it a secret for 14 years but that speaking about it helped him stop feeling ashamed of his diagnosis.

He told BBC News it was important the event also reflected the work of business leaders and companies promoting inclusion.

He said: “It’s about creating a more inclusive society where people are respected and they feel empowered at work and valued.

“It’s not all about which celebrity is here, it’s about everyday places making change for the better.”

Sarah Garrett MBE, founder of the awards, said they were about “celebrating our community and those who uplift it”.

Previous winners include: Adele Roberts, for her work promoting awareness of bowel cancer; Tom Daley, who won the sports personality of the year category, and Doctor Who actor David Tennant.

Trump: 'Hard' for Israel to stop strikes now

0

President Trump on Friday said it would be difficult for Israel to stop strikes on Iran at this point, a week into the intense conflict between the two nations and two weeks out from the president’s decision on U.S. involvement.

“I think it’s very hard to make that request right now,” he said, when pressed about the Iranian foreign minister saying that the U.S. would call on Israel to stop airstrikes if Trump is serious about negotiations.

“If somebody is winning, it’s a little bit harder to do than if somebody is losing, but we’re ready, willing and able, and we’ve been speaking to Iran, and we’ll see what happens. We’ll see what happens,” Trump added.

The president also said he might support a ceasefire, but continued, “it’s very hard to stop when you look at it — Israel’s doing well in terms of war, and I think you would say that Iran is doing less well.”

As of Thursday, correspondence between the U.S. and Iran “has continued,” according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who did not provide specifics about whether communications were direct or through intermediaries.

Leavitt also said Thursday that Trump will make a decision “in the next two weeks” on whether to intervene in Israel’s conflict with Iran.

Trump on Friday described the two-week timeline as the maximum he would give to Iran.

“We’re going to see what that period of time is, but I’m giving them a period of time, and I would say two weeks would be the maximum,” he said.

Additionally, he was asked about if an aerial campaign in Iran would be enough or if ground forces would be necessary if the U.S. were to get involved. Trump pushed back on the idea of boots on the ground.

“Well, I’m not going to talk about ground forces. The last thing you want to do is ground force,” he said.
