Eleven killed by Israeli fire while seeking aid, rescuers say

0

Eleven Palestinians seeking aid were among at least 33 killed by Israeli gunfire and strikes across Gaza on Wednesday, rescuers and medics say.

A spokesman for the Hamas-run civil defence agency said Israeli forces “opened fire and launched several shells” at thousands of people who were queuing for desperately needed food supplies on the main Salah al-Din Road.

The Israeli military said troops operating in the Nuseirat area fired warning shots overnight after a group approached them in a manner that posed a potential threat, but that it was unaware of any injuries.

Another 19 people were killed in three Israeli air strikes in northern and southern Gaza, according to the civil defence agency.

They included eight who died when a home was hit in the Zeitoun area of Gaza City, it said.

Regarding the air strikes, the Israeli military said it was “operating to dismantle Hamas military capabilities” in the territory.

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said on Wednesday afternoon that at least 140 people had been killed over the previous 24 hours.

The ministry reported on Tuesday that 51 people were killed while waiting for aid in the southern city of Khan Younis, while the UN cited partner organisations working on health as putting the death toll at more than 60.

Eyewitnesses told the BBC that Israeli tanks and drones opened fire as crowds gathered near a charity community centre and a warehouse belonging to the UN’s World Food Programme.

The Israeli military acknowledged that its troops were in the area and said the details of the incident were under review.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, the civil defence agency said another seven people seeking aid were killed and many others were injured on Rashid Street north-west of Gaza City.

A doctor at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City told Reuters news agency that the fatalities were the result of Israeli air strikes and that the injuries were caused by gunfire.

Umm Fida Masoud said her son “went to bring a bag of flour and came back [injured] in a bag”.

Meanwhile, a local journalist posted footage that he said showed his cousin celebrating after collecting a bag of flour for his family.

“A 50kg bag. I pulled it out from under the truck, inches from death,” he declares.

Almost 400 people have been killed while trying to get aid since 26 May, when the Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) opened the first of its three distribution centre, according to the health ministry.

The GHF, which uses US private security contractors, aims to bypass the UN as the main supplier of aid to the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza.

The UN and other aid groups refuse to co-operate with the new system, saying it contravenes the humanitarian principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence.

They also warn that Gaza’s population faces catastrophic levels of hunger after an 11-week total Israeli blockade that was partially eased a month ago.

The US and Israel say GHF’s system will prevent aid being stolen by Hamas, which the group denies doing.

On Wednesday, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) condemned it as “lame, medieval and lethal”.

“Inviting starving people to their death is a war crime. Those responsible of this system must be held accountable,” Philippe Lazzarini wrote on X.

“This is a disgrace and a stain on our collective consciousness.”

The GHF has not commented, but it said in a statement that it had so far distributed 30 million meals across its three distribution centres “without incident”.

“We remain focused on a singular mission: to feed the people of Gaza – and we are committed to scaling our efforts to reach even more in need,” it added.

The WFP meanwhile warned that the 9,000 tonnes of food aid it had dispatched over the past four weeks was “a tiny fraction” of what was needed in Gaza.

It also said the desperate need for food was causing large crowds to gather along well-known transport routes, hoping to intercept and access humanitarian supplies while in transit.

“Only a massive scale-up in food distributions can stabilize the situation, calm anxieties and rebuild the trust within communities that more food is coming,” it said.

Israeli military body Cogat reported that 85 lorry loads of aid entered southern and northern Gaza via the Kerem Shalom and Erez West crossings on Tuesday, 66 of which were collected. Another 380 lorry loads of aid were waiting for collection by the UN, it said.

The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

At least 55,637 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s health ministry.

Biden to attend Juneteenth celebration in Galveston

0

Former President Biden will attend a Juneteenth celebration at a historic church in Galveston, Texas, on Thursday, The Associated Press reported.

Biden will attend the event hosted by the Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church — one of the places the order announcing the end of slavery in Texas was read on June 19, 1865.

That historic day is now commemorated each year on June 19. Biden signed legislation into law making Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021.

The church, which describes itself as “the birthplace of Juneteenth,” hosts an annual celebration including a “family fun day,” a historic reenactment of the “emancipation march,” and an “emancipation service,” according to the website.

Biden marked Juneteenth last year about a week early, hosting a celebration concert at the White House that included singers Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle.

“The day reminds us that we have a helluva lot more work to do,” Biden told the nearly 1,700 attendees. “Let’s keep marching. Let’s keep the faith.”

President Trump does not have any public events listed for Thursday.

The Hill has reached out to Biden’s office about his plans.

YouTube is plugging Veo 3 AI videos directly into Shorts

0

YouTube is bringing its Veo 3 AI video generation model, which my colleague Allison Johnson recently called “a slop monger’s dream,” to YouTube Shorts later this summer, according to a Cannes Lions keynote from YouTube CEO Neal Mohan.

Shorts creators can already take advantage of the previous-generation Veo 2 model to generate backgrounds with Dream Screen as well as standalone clips. Mohan didn’t specify exactly what Veo 3 will enable in Shorts, but he did mention Veo 3’s improved video quality and that it can incorporate audio, so presumably those upgrades will be coming to Shorts.

It’s also unclear if Shorts creators will have to pay to use Veo 3. Right now, generating Veo 3 videos requires a paid subscription to Google’s AI Pro or AI Ultra plans. Google didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.

Mohan also announced that Shorts are now averaging more than 200 billion views per day.

Why Man City are taking Club World Cup so seriously

0

BOCA RATON, Florida — After winning the FIFA Club World Cup in December 2023, Pep Guardiola walked into the media theatre at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Saudi Arabia and insisted he had “closed a chapter.” Everything was done, he said, and the last remaining piece of silverware was safely tucked away in Manchester CIty’s trophy cabinet.

It’s been 18 months since Guardiola’s emotional speech in Jeddah. But having arrived in Florida on Thursday evening ahead of the latest version of the Club World Cup, he delivered another.

The players had dinner — chicken, lamb and fish were all on the menu — and a stretch outside at the team hotel before the City boss gathered everyone together. Guardiola told them the tournament in the U.S. was a fresh start; it was drummed in that this isn’t a competition being tagged onto the end of the 2024-25 season, City’s worst campaign for a decade. Rather, it’s the start of the 2025-26 season and it should be treated as such.

It’s a small, but important, distinction: New season, new cycle, new chapter.

“As the defending champions coming into this new format, of course we’re very excited. We’re very excited to come in as champions,” said chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak in his annual message to fans last month. “This is a very, very serious competition. We’re going there to win it. This is the beginning of the new season, not the continuation of last season.”

City have done as much as they can to make this feel like a clean slate. Players who aren’t part of Guardiola’s plans — Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips — have been left at home. And instead of taking their time bringing in fresh faces, new director of football Hugo Viana (helped by predecessor, Txiki Begiristain) has pushed through deals for Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Aït-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli at a cost of more than £100 million in transfer fees.

These were long-term targets City would have been happy to wait for, but the idea was to get as many new players as possible through the door during FIFA’s specially created Club World Cup transfer window, which ran from June 1-10. The hope is that being away with the squad — socialising as well as training — will help them settle quicker. By the time the new Premier League season kicks off in August, they should be fully up to speed.

City sources have told ESPN that the club’s transfer business might not be over and that Guardiola will “see how it goes” at the Club World Cup before pushing for more additions. With Walker on his way out, possibly to Fenerbahce though with late interest from Everton, there’s room in the squad for another right-back. There is adequate cover in the shape of Rico Lewis, Matheus Nunes and Manuel Akanji, but no concrete first choice. There was interest in Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso in January, though it’s cooled slightly since.

For Guardiola, this summer’s been just as important to start moving players on. He’s named a squad of 27 for the Club World Cup, though it would have been 28 had Mateo Kovacic not been ruled out with an Achilles injury. Guardiola has threatened to “quit” if he’s forced to work with a bloated squad next season, which means some players who have travelled to the U.S. for this competition might still end up departing this summer.

Vitor Reis, the 19-year-old Brazilian centre-back signed for nearly £30m in January, could leave on loan. There are also nagging question marks over John Stones, only fit enough to make 11 Premier League appearances last season, and Ilkay Gündogan, who is wanted by Galatasaray. Guardiola has said he wants a more durable group after being decimated by injuries last season.

Stones and Gundogan are two of a group of senior players who are entering the final year of their contracts, which also includes Éderson, Stefan Ortega and Bernardo Silva. Overall, the rebuild that began in January with Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Reis, and continued with Reijnders, Cherki and Ait-Nouri in June, is likely to carry on next summer.

The changes this summer are not restricted to players, either. Trusted staff members Juanma Lillo, Inigo Dominguez and Carlos Vicens have left, replaced by Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant at Liverpool, Pepijn Lijnders, and James French, who arrives from Anfield as set piece coach. The appointment of Lijnders is most eye-catching. The Dutchman was at the centre of the Liverpool team under Klopp, which Guardiola considers to be one of the fiercest rivals of his managerial career.

Kolo Touré, who has been working with the youth team, is also in the U.S. as part of Guardiola’s backroom team — City haven’t yet ruled out the former City and Liverpool defender taking on a permanent role in the future.

Sources have told ESPN one of Guardiola’s aims this season is to get his players to move the ball more quickly. It’s been inspired, in part, by Paris Saint-Germain‘s performance against Inter in the Champions League final, and it was noticeable during training at Lynn University on Saturday that Lijnders was constantly walking between the drills shouting “speed, speed.”

Fans may well see a quicker City team next season, with Saturday’s session in the humid Florida heat a long one. It started at 10 a.m. with quick passing drills, and ended with shape work nearly two hours later.

Nothing has been left to chance in terms of preparation for this Club World Cup either. City staff went on their first training ground site visits in October and returned twice more in December and March. On Saturday, as soon as the players had finished training on one field and moved to another, City’s own ground staff — who travelled from Manchester — were on mowers to repair the pitch.

Each game at the Club World Cup is being treated like a Champions League fixture. The only difference to the schedule is that players and staff will return to their Boca Raton base the night after games, rather than staying overnight in other cities for rest and recovery.

Hislop changes view on the Club World Cup

Shaka Hislop say he was “wrong” about his early scepticism of the Club World Cup after the first few games of the tournament.

There has been some skepticism about the new tournament from within the squad, particularly the extra matches crammed into a packed calendar. Silva and Rúben Dias were playing in the Nations League final for Portugal as recently as June 8. However, now that they’re in the U.S. with the City squad, sources have told ESPN that the drive and competitiveness has taken over. Phil Foden says there’s a determination to become the first team to win the new trophy.

“It’s definitely a bit of that, yeah,” said Foden. “Obviously, speaking to a few of the lads, we’ve spoken about that, being the first on the trophy would be nice. So that’s definitely the aim, and with the players that we have and the quality we have in the team, I am pretty sure we’re more than capable of doing that.”

Ahead of the first game against Moroccan side Wydad AC in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Guardiola has been described by City sources as “happy and relaxed.” He greeted reporters at one open training session with a smile and a handshake, even saying how much he was enjoying the weather, which has been mostly 80 degrees and sunshine except for the odd tropical rain shower.

For the first time during Guardiola’s incredible City reign, the storm clouds gathered over the Etihad last season. He’s hoping to use the Club World Cup and his time away in the U.S. to start blowing them away before setting his team on course for brighter days ahead.

Jason Segel Reveals Reason He Left Hollywood After ‘How I Met Your Mother’ in 2014

Jason Segel‘s love for Kayla Radomski isn’t shrinking—in fact, it’s only growing.

The So You Think You Can Dance alum announced that she’s engaged to the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor by sharing five photos of his fairytale proposal on Instagram.

Kayla captioned the June 18 carousel post “FOREVER YES,” along with diamond ring and heart emojis. She also called it the “best day of my life” when she reshared the photos to her Instagram Stories.

Jason, 45, got down on one knee in front of a columned statue in a garden at the Huntington Library in Pasadena surrounded by pink and red flower arrangements, with petals strewn under the couple’s feet. Kayla, 34, appeared to be surprised by the romantic moment, staring at the new rock on her finger in disbelief as Jason looked on in happiness.

The pair—who were first romantically linked in October 2023—shared a kiss before sitting down at a table overlooking the garden, with Jason sweetly holding Kayla’s hand as a bottle of champagne chilled in an ice bucket behind them.

After a night of terror in Kyiv, the search for dead goes on

Oleksandr Bondarchuk was unable to make it to a shelter when the strikes hit Kyiv. “It was terrible,” he said. “Everything was destroyed.”

Evhen Povarenkov was standing at a line of police tape that separated the public from the intensive search and rescue operation around his building.

He stared up at what was left of his apartment, in a suburb of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. His windows had disappeared, his balcony was on the verge of collapse.

Below, personal belongings were strewn across the pathways. Bedsheets and towels hung from the branches of trees.

A cruise missile slammed into this ordinary residential block in the Solomianskyi neighbourhood in the early hours of Tuesday morning, likely travelling at about 500mph. The blast destroyed 35 apartments and hollowed out an entire section of the building.

By Wednesday afternoon, 23 people had been found dead in the rubble. Across Ukraine, at least 30 were known to have been killed in the attacks, all but two of them in Kyiv.

The air strike on Povarenkov’s building was just one of a huge wave sent by Russia – a total of more than 440 drones and 32 missiles, Ukraine’s air force said.

The barrage smashed the capital for nine hours, from midnight until well past dawn. It was among the worst attacks on Kyiv since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.

A cruise missile destroyed an entire section of a nine-storey residential building in Kyiv. Flowers were laid by mourners in the playground beneath.

Povarenkov, a 43-year-old warehouse worker, looked down from his wrecked apartment. His face was cut and grazed all over and one of his eyes was severely bloodshot. He could not see out of it.

He was in bed when the missile hit, he said. His elderly mother was asleep in the next room.

“There was heat, fire, and smoke,” he said, recalling the huge impact just metres from his wall. “I lost consciousness. When I came to, I heard my mother screaming.”

Neighbours helped Povarenkov knock out his warped door and get his mother of the apartment. Other survivors were emerging into the remains of the shattered building.

“People were screaming, children were crying,” said pensioner Arcadiy Volenchuk, 60. “It was total chaos.”

Outside, the residents tried to find a safe route through burning cars and falling debris.

“Everything was on fire,” said Alla, 69, a teacher. “The fuel tanks in the cars were exploding. Broken glass was pouring from above, along with pieces of concrete and tiles.”

Povarenkov’s mother was rushed to intensive care, he said, with two broken collarbones, cuts to both her eyes and severe damage to her internal organs that required surgery.

She was one of more than 100 wounded in the city. At around midnight, Serhii Dubrov, anesthesiologist and director of the 12th Kyiv City Clinical Hospital, felt the strikes begin.

Within hours, his hospital alone would receive 27 patients, he said.

“They had soft tissue injuries, lacerations from broken glass, damage to blood vessels. There were traumatic brain injuries and internal chest injuries. One had a severed femoral artery – we were able to repair it. The worst was a woman with open head injury.

“These are the kinds of injuries we see from these kinds of attacks.”

The patients at Dr Dubrov’s hospital ranged from 18 to 95, he said. Three were in their 90s. Strikes like these, on residential buildings, can be particularly dangerous for the elderly and infirm, who cannot easily dash to an underground shelter.

Oleksandr Bondarchuk, a 64-year-old disabled man whose apartment was also close to the impact point, could not make it to the shelter. He lay in bed terrified throughout, he said.

An hour after the attack, Bondarchuk was able to slowly make his way downstairs. “It was terrible,” he said. “Everything was destroyed.”

Some of those whose apartments were severely damaged were able to find shelter with friends or relatives. Others were not so fortunate. “This is all I have,” Bondarchuk said.

Rescue workers were still discovering new bodies under the rubble on Wednesday afternoon.

Rescue workers were still discovering new bodies under the rubble on Wednesday afternoon.

The strikes hit Ukraine as the president, Volodymyr Zelensky, was travelling to the G7 conference in Canada to meet world leaders. Some in Ukraine suspect that the timing was intentional – a brutal message from Russia.

The scale of the attack underscored Ukraine’s desperate need for international support, including increased air defences. But in the end, it would prove to be an unsuccessful day for Zelensky.

His much anticipated bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump evaporated as the strikes were happening, when Trump announced he would leave the conference early amid the crisis in the Middle East.

With Trump not present, a meeting of European leaders on Ukraine failed to produce a joint statement of support for the country – a statement that was much-hoped for on the Ukrainian side.

As Zelensky travelled home from Canada on Wednesday, people from around the Solomianskyi neighbourhood in south-west Kyiv gathered to lay flowers at the site of the cruise missile attack.

Police wouldn’t let Evhen Povarenkov pass the line of tape to retrieve his and his mother’s possessions from their shattered apartment, so he just stood and stared. A hundred feet away, emergency workers had just found two more bodies in the rubble.

They did not know how many more they would find, they said.

Fed keeps rates steady as Trump ramps up attacks on Powell

0

The Federal Reserve kept interbank interest rates at a range of 4.25 to 4.5 percent Wednesday amid trade policy fluctuations and pressure from President Trump.

Fed officials stressed the overall health of U.S. economic conditions, which has seen decreasing inflation in recent months along with steady levels of low unemployment.

The unemployment rate has held at 4.2 percent in its past three readings, with about 7 million people out of work in a labor force of 170 million.

Inflation ticked up slightly in May consumer price index (CPI) to a 2.4-percent annual increase from 2.3 percent in April. It declined in its previous three readings from a 3-percent increase in January.

The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, which is the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, fell to a 2.1-percent increase in April – nearly at the Fed’s target rate of 2 percent.

Many economists and businesses have been warning of higher prices due to President Trump’s tariffs, which have raised the overall U.S. tariff rate to the highest level in nearly 100 years. So far, however, they have yet to show up conclusively in the price data.

End-user import prices were up just 0.2 percent annually in May and have changed little over the past year.

Trade services in the producer price index (PPI), which can show the margin effects of tariffs, were up 0.4 percent in May but were down for apparel, which is a heavily imported consumer good.

Apparel prices overall decreased in May while margins were unchanged, suggesting those importers were eating the cost, according to former Fed economist Claudia Sahm.

“For now, any extra costs of tariffs (not offset by the lower import prices) appear to be absorbed by businesses,” chief economist Claudia Sahm of New Century Advisers wrote in a Wednesday analysis focused on the apparel sector. “Those costs could be passed on later via higher consumer prices, but the apparel gross margins are elevated relative to pre-pandemic levels, which could provide some cushion.”

President Trump has been calling for the Fed to resume its interest rate cuts, which it started in the back half of last year but has paused since January after inflation ticked up over the fall.

Trump went so far as to call Fed Chair Jerome Powell a “numbskull” recently for maintaining his pause, which will increase interest costs on sky-high U.S. debt levels that are likely to be made worse by GOP tax-and-spending cut legislation now making its way through Congress.

However, markets and economists expected the Fed to maintain rates while businesses react to Trump’s tariffs.

“Every one of the 95 forecasts in the consensus expects rates to be unchanged,” UBS economist Paul Donovan wrote in a Wednesday commentary. “U.S. President Trump advocates rate cuts, but this is a distinctly minority view. The trade tax increase is big, and the Fed wants greater certainty about its impact before changing policy.”

Businesses can respond to the tariffs in three main ways — by eating the cost of the taxes, raising prices, or lowering overhead. They can also change their supply chains and production schedules in a way that could impact all three.

Consumer sentiment has languished in the wake of Trump’s trade war. Retail sales took a dive this week, with purchases declining by 0.9 percent in May from April.

Also weighing on the Fed’s decisionmaking has been the prospect of a major war in the Middle East, following comprehensive strikes by Israel on Iran’s nuclear facilities as well as targeted assassinations of Iranian military leaders and scientists.

This has led to a spike in oil prices last week, one of the largest single day movements on record.

Oil prices were up again Monday yesterday, as Brent crude finished the day at its highest level since February at $76.45 per barrel.

“Oil is still below its 2024 average of $80 so we have to put things in perspective from an inflationary angle but it was trading at $58.20 in early May,” analysts for Deutsche Bank wrote in a Wednesday note to investors.

Trump has warned of increasing escalation in the conflict, saying that “the next week is going to be very big.” Iranian leader Ali Khameini’s social media channel posted overnight that “the battle begins.”

Royal Unibrew fined over greenwashing claims

0

Danish beverage company Royal Unibrew has agreed to pay a DKr4m ($617,000) fine for the misleading marketing of its Egekilde water.

According to the Danish consumer ombudsman, Royal Unibrew’s promotion of Egekilde water featured statements about CO₂ neutrality without stating on the packaging that the brand partly achieved this through climate compensation.

As a result, the beverage manufacturer was reported to the consumer ombudsman for violating Danish marketing law in the period from 2022 to 2024. According to local reports, it is the largest fine imposed in Denmark for so-called greenwashing.

Louise Palsten, the general manager for Royal Unibrew’s business in Denmark, said “We can confirm that we have received and paid a fine – and we naturally take that very seriously.

“We have achieved CO₂ neutrality through partial climate compensation but we acknowledge that our communication on this could have been clearer.”

Palsten said the product’s packaging included a reference to the brewery’s website, where you could find an explanation about the firm’s climate compensation initiatives.

She added: “We regret this and take note of it. It has never been our intention to cause any confusion among consumers about our efforts to reduce Egekilde’s climate footprint.

“Before receiving the initial inquiry from the Danish Consumer Ombudsman, we had already begun phasing out the ‘CO₂-neutral’ label from Egekilde. As a result, this statement is no longer used on our products.”

Danish Consumer Ombudsman Torben Jensen added: “If a product states that it is CO₂ neutral, it must be clear and obvious to consumers if the neutrality has been achieved through climate compensation.”

“If this information is not stated, the statement about CO₂ neutrality is already misleading for that reason and thus a violation of the [Danish] Marketing Act.”

“Royal Unibrew fined over greenwashing claims” was originally created and published by Just Drinks, a GlobalData owned brand.

Nintendo Switch 2: Which webcams work?

0

The Nintendo Switch 2 is more expensive in practically every way: pricier console, pricier games, an entire Chat button you’ll eventually have to pay to use. So it was nice when Nintendo revealed you won’t need its own $55 camera to video chat with pals.

“You can use the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory (sold separately) or any compatible USB-C® camera you’d like,” the company wrote. But you might be mighty disappointed if you simply buy a PC webcam off the shelf.

Many USB-C webcams we’ve tried don’t work at all, including the ones you’ll typically find on “best webcam” lists around the internet, like the Logitech Brio 4K, the Insta360 Link, and the Elgato Facecam MK.2. Meanwhile, ancient USB-A cameras like my Logitech C920 fire up instantly with no trouble at all.

So: which webcams work? Neither Nintendo nor any major webcam manufacturer had even a partial list for us of compatible webcams. We asked Logitech, Razer, Microsoft, Anker, Elgato, Dell, Insta360, Obsbot, and Opal — but as of June 18th, none could say which of their webcams work, or why some don’t.

But we don’t necessarily need those companies to answer the former: we gamers and journalists can create a list of working webcams ourselves! Here is Reddit’s latest crowdsourced list, and we’ve additionally tested a variety of cams that are — and aren’t — working here at The Verge.

In order to separate “take it with a grain of salt” from “confirmed working,” we’ll start with our own first-hand confirmation. Below that, you’ll find the full Reddit list as of June 18th, 2025.

Shoutouts to u/shutyourbutt69 (yes, I know) for compiling the Reddit master list, and to u/Darkwulf3 who created the earlier Reddit thread.

In our testing, it doesn’t seem to matter if you use the Switch USB-C ports or the USB-A ports on the dock, whether you’re going through a C-to-A adapter, or whether you daisy-chain with a USB hub: the webcams that work, work, and the ones that don’t, don’t.

Overall, it’s starting to look like Nintendo didn’t mean “compatible with USB-C,” but rather “compatible with Switch 2.” So why did it suggest you can use any camera you’d like? Nintendo didn’t answer the question.

To Nintendo’s credit, it is incredibly easy to test which cameras do work with the console. Just go to Systems Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Test USB Camera and working ones will automatically display an image on the screen as soon as you plug them in.

And to Elgato’s credit, it tells The Verge it may try to update its cameras: “For cameras that do not work, we will explore firmware updates to enable compatibility with Switch 2,” reads a statement via spokesperson Justin Ocbina. Obsbot says it will also see if it can update its cameras, but it doesn’t yet know what the difficulty is.

If you know why some webcams don’t work with the Switch 2, let us know! I’m at sean@theverge.com.

Update, June 18th: Added Reddit’s updated master list of cameras, and the lack of response from any webcam company.
