Pritzker suggests Texas National Guard preparing for Chicago deployment

0

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) suggested the Trump administration is preparing the Texas National Guard for deployment to Chicago amid the president’s threats to federalize law enforcement in the Windy City.

“We have reason to believe that the Trump administration has already begun staging the Texas National Guard for deployment in Illinois,” Pritzker said during a Tuesday press conference.

President Trump had warned Pritzker in recent weeks about getting crime under control in Chicago before saying on Tuesday he would be sending the National Guard into the city in a matter of time.

“Well, we’re going in. I didn’t say when. We’re going in,” Trump said Tuesday. “Look, I have an obligation. This isn’t a political thing. I have an obligation.”

The Illinois governor has made his distaste for the idea well known, warning Chicago residents not to “take the bait” when the National Guard does get deployed.

“I want to be very clear on this point … that the Trump plan is to use any excuse to deploy armed military personnel to Chicago. If someone flings a sandwich at an ICE agent, Trump will try and go on TV and declare an emergency in Chicago,” Pritzker said, appearing to reference an incident in Washington, D.C., during which a man threw a sandwich at a Customs and Border Protection agent at the beginning of Trump’s crime crackdown.

“I’m imploring everyone, if, and when, that happens, do not take the bait,” he added.

The White House has hailed the success of Trump’s federal crime crackdown in D.C. since he brought in the National Guard last month, including by touting comments from D.C.’s Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser.

“The Mayor’s fellow Democrats should take note, working with President Trump means safer communities and less crime — no one in their right mind could seriously oppose that,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: Are Real Madrid kings of the free transfer?

0

If ‘the best things in life are free’ then clearly nobody told the 20 Premier League clubs, who spent an eye-watering £3.1bn this summer.

The top tier of English football is in a unique position. As the Premier League’s popularity and profits have grown, the money awarded to clubs competing in it far outweighs that of their European counterparts.

But Real Madrid once again proved this summer that money can only do so much.

There can be little doubt that when it comes to acquiring world-class talent for nothing or next to nothing, the Spanish giants are in a league of their own.

When Los Blancos signed Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool for 10m euros (£8.4m) in June, the fee was just to accelerate the move so he could be registered in time to play in the Club World Cup.

That signing meant for the fourth time in five years Real Madrid had won the free transfer lottery after signing David Alaba in 2021, Antonio Rudiger in 2022, Kylian Mbappe in 2024 and Alexander-Arnold, who would have joined for free if Real had decided to wait, in 2025.

What makes their hoard even more impressive is that they have signed talent from their biggest European rivals in Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Paris St-German and Liverpool respectively.

La Liga commentator Phil Kitromilides told BBC Sport that when the 36-time champions of Spain come calling it’s almost impossible to ignore them.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from, it doesn’t matter who you played for before. It doesn’t matter who your team was when you were growing up as a kid, this is it. This is the biggest thing you will ever do in your career,” he said.

“Take Trent for example – he was playing for his boyhood team [Liverpool]. He wouldn’t have done this for any other club but Real Madrid. It’s the allure, the grandeur.”

The fact Real Madrid sign these players for nothing is not the surprising factor. What’s intriguing is more often than not the players are aware the La Liga club perhaps can’t afford or are maybe unwilling to pay the asking price for them.

However, they are so keen to join they are willing to run down the final year of their current deals to make it happen.

Real Madrid have a long and illustrious history of winning major trophies – and the same can be said for landing a prized free agent, notably dating back to 1988 when German international Bernd Schuster famously left Barcelona to ply his trade at the Bernabeu.

Add to the list Steve McManaman, Michael Laudrup and Fernando Morientes – a few other names who’ve made the move for free.

Kitromilides added: “[In Madrid] second is nothing, absolutely nothing. The club has a relentless desire to win everything, every single possible trophy. This philosophy has helped them to build an aura of mystique. That is what’s helped convinced big-name players to run down their contracts at big clubs.”

Massie says he’s confident he’ll get to 218 on Epstein discharge petition

0

The sponsor of the discharge petition seeking to publicize all the government files on Jeffrey Epstein said Tuesday that he’s confident the motion will secure enough signatures to force a vote on his bill.

“I’m not really engaged in a massive whipping effort. I just assume we’ll get the votes,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) told reporters in the Capitol.

Hours earlier, Massie had introduced a discharge petition designed to force a floor vote on legislation requiring the Department of Justice (DOJ) to release virtually all of its files on the Epstein case. As of Tuesday night, four Republicans had signed the petition: Reps. Nancy Mace (S.C.), Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) and Massie.

To hit the magic number of 218, two more Republicans would have to endorse the measure, assuming all 212 Democrats sign on, as expected.

Massie’s confident prediction came as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and other GOP leaders are hoping to defuse the GOP outcry over the Epstein case — and to discourage Republican lawmakers from endorsing Massie’s petition.

With that in mind, Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Tuesday evening released a large number of documents and videos delivered by the DOJ under subpoena from the panel.

Democrats on the committee have dismissed that effort, arguing that virtually all of that material had been made public previously. And Massie offered a similar assessment, saying the documents he’s seen from that trove “were just completely redacted pages.”

“The DOJ’s curating all of that, and they’re releasing what they want to release. And I think it’s going to be like the binders that Attorney General [Pam] Bondi released [earlier in the year],” he said.

“People are going to go through them and say, ‘Hey, wait. There’s nothing new here. This is stuff we already knew.’ And then that will only incite people to be more upset that there’s no transparency.”

There are 12 Republican co-sponsors of Massie’s underlying bill to force the DOJ disclosures, which is sponsored with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.). It’s unclear, however, how many of those GOP lawmakers are willing to take the longer step in bucking President Trump by signing the discharge petition.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.), for instance, has co-sponsored the Massie-Khanna bill but is rejecting the discharge petition, citing a concern that it could lead to sloppy disclosures that could harm people who were connected to Epstein but did nothing wrong.

“There are good people that can be hurt, and we also have to protect the victims. So it should go through committee in a more careful and thoughtful way,” Van Drew said. “I’m not going to sign the discharge petition, but I do support the bill. And that’s where I’ve been from the beginning.”

To promote their effort, Massie and Khanna are staging a press conference Wednesday morning at the Capitol with some of Epstein’s victims. Johnson and members of the Oversight Committee had also met with Epstein survivors on Tuesday, but it was done behind closed doors. Wednesday’s event, by contrast, will be public.

Massie said the difference is significant in dispelling the idea, advanced by Trump, that the Epstein saga is a “hoax.”

“I do think the game changer here is the survivors speaking tomorrow. Because although I wasn’t in the meeting that they had in the Oversight Committee, I heard it was very emotional,” Massie said.

“When they say those things publicly, there’s no way you can call this a hoax.”

Australia’s Westpac to hire 350 more bankers to win business lending market share

0

By Scott Murdoch

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia’s Westpac Banking Corp aims to hire 350 bankers in the next two years to help gain business banking market share and close the gap on its major rivals, it said on Tuesday.

The bank had hired 135 business bankers so far this year, Paul Fowler, Westpac’s chief executive of business banking and wealth told an analyst briefing.

Westpac, Australia’s second-largest bank by market capitalisation, had a 16.1% business lending market share in July, up from 15.3% the same time last year, according to regulatory figures released last week.

It sits third behind National Australia Bank with 21.6% and the country’s largest lender, Commonwealth Bank, with 18.85%, the figures showed.

Westpac and CBA are targeting NAB’s stronghold on business banking by offering reduced lending rates to get customers to switch banks, according to analysts, at a time when the bank is undergoing major change.

NAB’s business banking head Andrew Auerbach began in June and has previously not run a business banking division and that makes it vulnerable to competitors trying to pinch market share, analysts say.

NAB will hold a business banking briefing on Wednesday.

Fowler said Westpac’s business and wealth division recorded a net profit of A$1.1 billion ($714.78 million) in the first half of the current financial year, making it the largest contributor to the bank’s A$3.3 billion net profit.

“Almost a decade ago, Westpac held a leading position in business banking in this country. Since that time, we’ve had times where we lost focus and we’ve conceded considerable ground,” Fowler said.

“… we’ve made a decision, a strategic decision, to tilt towards business banking.”

Fowler joined Westpac in May after 10 years at CBA.

Lauren James: England winger criticises fans as ‘too quick to judge’ at Euro 2025

0

James had played a key role in getting England through the group stage – she scored twice in the 4-0 win over the Netherlands.

But she missed her side’s second spot-kick in the penalty shootout quarter-final win over Sweden – and admitted being scared of getting racist abuse.

Team-mates Beth Mead, Alex Greenwood and Grace Clinton also failed to score before England eventually progressed 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

However, James’ England team-mate Jess Carter revealed she was subjected to racism online after the game and during the tournament. Carter subsequently said she feared James would face “astronomical abuse” if her missed penalty had decided the outcome against Sweden.

When England’s men lost to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka – who all missed penalties – suffered racist abuse on social media.

Asked if that was on her mind in Zurich, James admitted: “For sure. Stepping up, I was thinking, if I miss I hope I’m not the only one because I know what comes with it – it happened before and keeps happening.

“As sad as it sounds, it was the biggest relief ever that other players missed. Who would have thought that? You always want your team-mates to score so you get through.

“Luckily we missed and got through, but it was not a nice moment – you are playing for your country so you should feel the support from the fans. It shouldn’t matter what colour you are.”

But James said that sort of treatment would still never make her think twice about representing her country.

“It’s where I’m from, where my mum is from, I always dreamed of playing for my country,” she added.

“We do great things with England – back-to-back Euros, thankfully I was part of the last one. I want to be part of every one going forward.”

Chelsea open the WSL season at home to Manchester City on Friday and face a hard ask to improve on their first campaign under manager Sonia Bompastor, where they won the league, FA Cup and League Cup.

But, having lost to Barcelona in the semi-finals, the hunger for a first Champions League title has been increased by Arsenal’s triumph over the Spaniards in last year’s final.

“Arsenal winning it last year shows the standard of English football,” said James. “It shows how standards are high, and makes us feel, yeah, we need to go and win it.”

House Democrat slams UK arrest of comedian over transgender X posts

0

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) condemned the United Kingdom’s arrest of comedian Graham Linehan for his social media posts about transgender people.

The Silicon Valley congressman called the arrest “an offense to anyone who supports free speech,” in a post on the social platform X.

“I guess UK has not learned from the time prosecutors read passages of The Picture of Dorian Gray to convict Oscar Wilde,” Khanna continued.

Linehan, a co-creator of British TV shows “Father Ted” and “The IT Crowd,” said on Tuesday that when he stepped off the plane at Heathrow Airport on Monday, he was greeted by five armed police officers who “told me I was under arrest for three tweets.”

“In a country where paedophiles escape sentencing, where knife crime is out of control, where women are assaulted and harassed every time they gather to speak, the state had mobilised five armed officers to arrest a comedy writer for these tweets,” Linehan said in a statement on Tuesday.

Linehan, who is known for asserting trans women are men, pointed to the posts on X about which police questioned him. One read: “If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls.”

London’s Metropolitan Police did not name Linehan but said in a statement to media outlets that a “man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of inciting violence,” adding, “This is in relation to posts on X.”

The arrest, which has faced fierce backlash internationally, comes ahead of Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage’s scheduled appearance before the House Judiciary Committee’s hearing on free speech.

Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said last week, when he invited Farage to testify, that the hearing will “highlight how European online censorship laws, specifically the United Kingdom’s (UK) Online Safety Act (OSA) and the European Union’s (EU) Digital Services Act (DSA), threaten Americans’ right to speak freely online in the United States.”

Farage told UK news tabloid The Sun that he plans to discuss the Linehan case during his testimony on Wednesday.

“The Graham Linehan case is yet another example of the war on free speech in the UK. I will discuss this, the Lucy Connolly case and the increasing role of our police in non-crime ‘hate’ incidents on Capitol Hill tomorrow. Free speech is under assault and I am urging the USA to be vigilant,” he said in the statement.

Weak pound and yen shore up dollar, bonds and payrolls in focus

By Alden Bentley and Jaspreet Kalra

NEW YORK/MUMBAI (Reuters) -Sterling and the Japanese yen slumped on Tuesday on growing investor anxiety about government finances, allowing the dollar to claw back some ground, while traders looked toward Friday’s U.S. jobs report for signals on the greenback’s next turn.

Renewed pressure on bond markets, with Britain’s 30-year borrowing costs rising to their highest levels since 1998, spilled over into currency markets, while gold hit fresh record highs.

“Negative developments outside of the U.S. are probably what’s driving the market today, in terms of dollar strength,” said Vassili Serebriakov, FX strategist at UBS in New York.

U.S. payrolls data to be released on Friday is likely to determine the path of the dollar in coming weeks, he added.

Sterling fell to a 3-1/2 week low and was 1.24% lower in afternoon trade at $1.3375. The dollar strengthened 0.84% to 148.40 yen, hitting its highest against the Japanese currency since August 1.

The euro fell 0.61% to $1.1637.

While worries about fiscal issues overseas were the main drivers when U.S. markets reopened after the Labor Day holiday, markets also keyed in on late Friday’s U.S. appeals court ruling that most of President Donald Trump‘s tariffs are illegal. The divided court allowed for the tariffs to remain until October 14, to give the administration a chance to file an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Also, the return of the U.S. Congress on Tuesday leaves less than a month to pass legislation that would keep federal agencies funded and avert a partial government shutdown.

The midmorning release of a slightly weaker-than-expected ISM manufacturing PMI did not elicit much response in the forex market, with Friday’s August non-farm payrolls the main focus of the week.

While sterling was weighed down by lingering worries over Britain’s fiscal position ahead of a budget later this year, dovish-leaning remarks from a Bank of Japan official and the resignation of a key ruling party official pulled down the yen.

“Sterling’s underperformance is reflecting the growing concerns over the fiscal situation as we move closer to the budget and it becomes a bigger focus for market participants,” said Lee Hardman, senior currency analyst at MUFG.

Finance minister Rachel Reeves is expected to raise taxes in her autumn budget in order to remain on course for her fiscal targets, potentially adding to the challenge of boosting growth.

For the Japanese yen, heightened political uncertainty was likely to remain a drag, while the lack of a hawkish policy signal from Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino on Tuesday would encourage speculators to continue rebuilding short yen positions, Hardman said.

US Open 2025: How electric New York energy has reignited tennis etiquette debate

Hitting an inviting short ball at an opponent who has moved towards the net is another common flashpoint.

Tsitsipas, regularly at the centre of drama, decided tagging Altmaier was fair game following his opponent’s underarm serve.

“Next time, don’t wonder why I hit you, OK? I’m just saying, if you serve underarm…” Tsitsipas told Altmaier at the net.

It is not the first time Tsitsipas has drawn ire for trying this tactic.

Targeting Arthur Fils’ body in Rome earlier this year did not pay off, as the incident fuelled the Frenchman on his way to victory.

Doubles player Andrea Vavassori was less pleased in Monte Carlo when he was struck in the ribs by American opponent Ben Shelton – who then labelled the Italian “soft”.

Norrie thinks hitting a ball at an opponent is fair game.

“Obviously you apologise but I think that’s a perfectly good play – it’s usually the best option to go middle,” he said.

“It’s good to acknowledge what you’ve done but you move on, man.

“If you’re hit with a tennis ball it’s not the end of the world – it’s not like we’re playing rugby.”

Hegseth shares video of strike on alleged Tren de Aragua drug boat

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Tuesday shared a video of what President Trump described as the “kinetic” strike that allegedly took out 11 members of the Tren de Aragua transnational gang on a “drug vessel” in the Caribbean that morning.

Trump announced the U.S. military strike in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Hegseth reposted Trump’s announcement of the strike and included a 29-second “unclassified” video of the alleged strike.

The video features black-and-white footage of the boat traveling in the sea, shot from several angles.

The video shows the boat continuing undisturbed for the first 20 seconds, before a flash of bright light appears on the screen and, for nine seconds, the boat is seen catching fire as smoke envelops the surrounding area.

“Earlier this morning, on my Orders, U.S. Military Forces conducted a kinetic strike against positively identified Tren de Aragua Narcoterrorists in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility,” Trump said in a post announcing the strike.

“TDA is a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, operating under the control of Nicolas Maduro, responsible for mass murder, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and acts of violence and terror across the United States and Western Hemisphere,” the president added in the post.

The strike took place while the boat was in international waters and was transporting “illegal” narcotics. It had departed Venezuela and was en route to the U.S., the president said.

“Please let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the United States of America,” Trump said. “BEWARE!”
