Startline, Blue Motor Finance seen as sale prospects after UK court ruling – Reuters

0

According to Reuters, car finance providers Startline and Blue Motor Finance could soon be up for sale following a UK Supreme Court ruling that has significantly reduced the potential compensation burden facing the sector. Analysts and advisers also told the news agency that larger lenders such as Aldermore and Close Brothers may draw interest from buyers as confidence returns.

The August ruling overturned much of a lower court decision on car loan sales practices, with several advisers estimating the final industry bill could be less than half the original £30 billion ($41 billion) projection.

“This is the real activity that will start now,” Hyder Jumabhoy, a partner at White & Case, told Reuters, saying owners now have “enough clarity to begin preparing [lenders] for sale” even as they await details of the final redress scheme.

Cabot Square Capital has already hired BNP Paribas to handle a sale of Blue Motor Finance, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Blue Motor posted an £8.5 million loss on £53 million in revenue in 2023. Startline, owned by US hedge fund The Baupost Group, could also come to market, with its latest accounts showing £100.3 million of income and a £4.25 million loss.

“There’s a series of highly attractive assets which have sat in private equity portfolios for longer than expected,” Elliot Reader, director at Houlihan Lokey, told Reuters, adding that “regulatory or macro reasons” had delayed exits until now.

The ruling has also prompted speculation about larger players. Moody’s analysts noted in June that specialist lenders such as Aldermore (owned by South Africa’s FirstRand) and Close Brothers could be acquisition targets. Both firms were closely involved in the legal challenge that led to the Supreme Court’s 1 August decision. Close Brothers’ shares have jumped about 25% since the ruling.

Still, some remain cautious. “Does [the ruling] pave the way for future M&A activity in the motor finance space given recent inactivity? Yes, but I’d expect any meaningful movement to emerge throughout 2026,” Antony Walsh, partner at Eversheds Sutherland, told Reuters.

The Financial Conduct Authority is now designing a compensation scheme for car loans involving discretionary commission arrangements, with mid-range estimates of £9-18 billion now seen as more realistic.

Despite this, the UK motor finance market remains robust. Around 80% of all new cars sold to consumers in the 12 months to April were financed, with total outstanding point-of-sale contracts valued at roughly £86 billion as of June, according to the Finance & Leasing Association.

The family of a couple who died in a helicopter crash on the Isle of Wight have said they are “heartbroken and struggling to cope with the loss”.

Justyna Czoska, 52, and Wojtek Kowalkowski, 49, were among three people who died when the aircraft came down during a training flight near Shanklin on Monday morning.

A fourth occupant of the helicopter remains seriously injured in hospital in Southampton.

Ms Czoska’s family have launched a fundraising appeal to help repatriate the couple to Poland to be buried.

Drone footage shows view from above the crash site

Jacob Butler said he launched the fundraiser after his partner, Julia, lost her “beloved mum and her partner” in the tragedy.

In a post written in English and Polish, he said: “This sudden and devastating event has left all us heartbroken and struggling to cope with the loss.

“We are now trying to bring them both back to Poland so they can be laid to rest with their families, in the place they called home.

“The cost of repatriation, funeral arrangements, and travel is more than we can manage alone, and we are asking for support during this incredibly difficult time.”

The helicopter departed from Sandown Airport at approximately 09:00, Northumbria Helicopters said

Witnesses reported the aircraft spiralling before crashing in a field alongside the A3020 at 09:20 BST.

One person was airlifted to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Southampton, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said.

A spokesman for operator Northumbria Helicopters said G-OCLV – a Robinson R44 II – had “departed from Sandown Airport at approximately 09:00, was carrying four passengers on board including the pilot, and was undertaking a flying lesson”.

The identity of the third victim has not yet been confirmed.

Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook responds to Trump: 'I will not resign'

0

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook doubled down on her vow not to resign from the Fed, after President Trump moved on Monday to fire the board member over mortgage fraud allegations.

In a statement, Cook argued the president has “no authority” to remove her from her post.

“President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause’ when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so,” she said in a statement obtained by The Hill’s sister network NewsNation. “I will not resign.”

“I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022,” Cook added.

Trump last week called for the Fed governor, who was appointed by former President Biden in 2022, to resign following allegations by Bill Pulte — a Trump ally and the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) — that she committed mortgage fraud by listing two primary residences. The president said he would try to remove Cook if she did not resign.

In his initial allegations, Pulte included photographs of document signatures allegedly belonging to Cook that applied to two different primary residences, one in Michigan and another described as an “Atlanta condo.”

The president has authority to fire members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors for cause, but it’s unclear if the allegations against Cook would reach that standard.

“I have determined that there is sufficient cause to remove you from your position,” Trump wrote in a letter to Cook, which was posted to Truth Social.

“The Federal Reserve has tremendous responsibility for setting interest rates and regulating reserve and member banks,” he said. “The American people must be able to have full confidence in the honestly of the members entrusted with setting policy and overseeing the Federal Reserve.”

The president added, “In light of your deceitful and potentially criminal conduct in a financial matter, they cannot and I do not have such confidence in your integrity.”

Cook has retained Abbe Lowell, a prominent Washington attorney, to represent her.

“President Trump has taken to social media to once again ‘fire by tweet’ and once again his reflex to bully is flawed and his demands lack any proper process, basis or legal authority,” Lowell said in a statement Monday.

He added, “We will take whatever actions are needed to prevent his attempted illegal action.”

TRENDING RUMORS

Manchester City women want to sign Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton, says The Times. Clinton, 22, has entered the final year of her contract at United and is considered one of the best young players in the Women’s Super League. Persuading the England international to move across Manchester before the women’s transfer window closes on Sept. 4 would be a huge coup for City, but they have yet to make an official approach.

Girona right back Arnau Martínez is on the radar of Arsenal, according to Footmercato. Martinez, 22, spent six years in the Barcelona academy before leaving in 2016 and has played his entire senior career at Girona. The Gunners are looking to strengthen their defensive depth and have reportedly made an offer of €8 million, plus €2 million in add-ons. to land the Spain U21 international.

Sport Bild report that Bayern Munich have reached a basic agreement with Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. Bayern are now negotiating a deal with Chelsea, which is likely to be a loan, and the 24-year-old is considered an alternative to the permanent signing of VfB Stuttgart‘s Nick Woltemade after the two clubs failed to agree a fee.

– Meanwhile, Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has reached out to Chelsea for talks over RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons, as reported by Philipp Hinze. The Blues must offload players before making a formal offer to sign the 22-year-old Netherlands international and, at the moment, only a player swap including somebody like Christopher Nkunku is feasible as Leipzig are looking for a fee of €70m.

– USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah is getting closer to joining Atalanta from AC Milan, reports Nicolo Schira, who adds that he has been offered a contract that runs until 2029 with the option for an extra year. Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that the move would be worth around €25m and could allow them to sign 22-year-old Bologna midfielder Giovanni Fabbian for around €15m.

CONFIRMED DEALS

– Serie A side Sassuolo have announced the signing of former Man United and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matić on a one-year contract.

– Chelsea women have confirmed that midfielder Julia Bartel will spend the season on loan at Atletico Madrid.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s resident scout Tor-Kristian Karlsen looks at Girona right back Arnau Martínez.

The 22-year-old has been on the scouting radar of some top European clubs for a while and he has the profile of a modern, versatile full back who can adapt to several roles: from orthodox right back in a back four, to wing back, and even as a right-sided center back in a back three.

Martinez’s La Masia education is very much visible in his game as he is secure on the ball, technically assured, decent with his weaker foot, and particularly good at finding attacking passing options centrally from deep positions — indeed, his 85% accuracy in forward distribution left him second only to Barcelona’s Jules Koundé among LaLiga’s right backs last season.

Energetic and dynamic, he gets around the pitch, carries the ball well at high speed and keeps up his intensity into the closing stages of matches. Less inclined to beat an opponent in a one-vs.one duel, he instead impresses with his positioning and ability to make overlapping runs. Though his crossing accuracy (26% last season) is one area of improvement, his three goals and three assists last season are testament to his efforts in attacking areas.

At 6-foot tall, he is of above-average size for a full back, but mainly relies on anticipation and reading of play rather than physicality or powerful tackles. He closes down opponents quickly and decisively, often stepping out of the defensive line for an early regain, which is a good match for a high pressing side like Arsenal. Martinez does look ready to take another step in his career, but the Gunners are more likely to consider him as a squad player than an instant regular.

Spotify is introducing a direct messaging feature that allows users to share music, podcast, and audiobook recommendations with each other without leaving the app. Messages is rolling out in “select markets” this week, according to Spotify’s press release, and will be available on mobile devices for Free and Premium users aged 16 years and older.

The messaging feature can be accessed by tapping the share icon when listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook in the Now Playing view, and selecting a friend to send it to. Spotify users can share content and start messages with people they share a Spotify plan with, or other users they’ve interacted with through Spotify before, such as via Jams, Blends, and Collaborative Playlists.

The feature aims to consolidate content recommendations that already happen over texts, social media, and third-party messaging services into a single location where Spotify users can more easily track their shared content. Any audio content shared with or by the user will be stored in the Messages inbox that’s accessed under the profile picture in the top-left corner of the app, making it easier to find again in the future. Spotify says the user-to-user messages are 1:1, support text conversations and emoji reactions, and are protected by “industry-standard encryption” — which will hopefully prevent any embarrassing data leaks.

Users can choose to accept or reject message requests, block other users, or opt out of Messages entirely. Users can also report any shared content and text messages, or the account that sent them, by holding down on the message to flag anything nefarious. Spotify says it will proactively scan Messages for “certain unlawful and harmful content” and review chats that get reported by users.

It’s unclear if artist accounts will also be able to use the feature to interact with fans. Spotify says that Messages was created to “complement” how content is shared through platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and TikTok, rather than replace those interactions. It’s an intriguing social feature for Spotify to add, especially since it’s available to free users, given the hefty limitations on those accounts, and could perhaps pave the way for more direct user-to-user interaction features in the future if it’s received well.

Israeli double strike on Gaza hospital

A double Israeli strike on a hospital in Gaza killed 20 people including journalists and health workers, according to the outlets they worked for, the World Health Organization and the Hamas-run health ministry.

At least one person was killed in an initial strike, and others in a second attack minutes later as rescuers and journalists attended the scene at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis.

The five journalists worked for international media outlets, including the Associated Press, Reuters, Al Jazeera and Middle East Eye.

Later on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incident a “tragic mishap” which Israel “deeply regrets” and said military authorities were “conducting a thorough investigation”.

How the attack unfolded

The first strike hit at around 10:00 local time, medical staff at Nasser said.

There was “mass panic… chaos”, said a British medical professional working at the hospital, who was treating patients in the intensive care unit at the time.

Approximately 10 minutes later there was another blast in the same spot, the medical professional said, adding that medical staff had been planning their escape from the building when the second strike hit.

The hospital’s emergency department, inpatient ward, and surgical unit was hit, according to the World Health Organization. Its head Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the emergency staircase was also damaged.

BBC Verify has seen footage to confirm these timings.

A livestream by Al Ghad TV shows several emergency workers responding to the first strike near the top floor of Nasser Hospital, as a number of journalists in the background film what’s happening.

A staircase, where journalists often gather to broadcast from, is visible in the video. A strike then directly hits the emergency workers and reporters, sending smoke and rubble in the air. At least one body is visible in the aftermath.

A separate video, filmed from the same staircase, shows the aftermath of the strike. Bodies can be seen on the staircase, as medics respond to the attack.

Another clip, filmed in front of the main entrance of Nasser hospital, shows a medical worker holding up bloodied clothes to the camera, before an explosion sends people running for cover.

The British medical professional described seeing “trails of blood all over the floor” and “absolute scenes of chaos, disbelief, and fear”.

Rescuers and journalists among dead in double strike on Nasser hospital – Yolande Knell reports

Who were the victims?

The identities of the slain journalists have been confirmed but we know little about the other fatalities. The Hamas-run health ministry said rescuers and patients were killed.

Husam al-Masri worked as a cameraman for Reuters. The news agency reported he was killed in a first strike on the hospital while operating a live TV feed for Reuters. News organisations around the world including the BBC have used footage he has taken.

Mariam Dagga, 33, was one of the few female journalists covering the war in Gaza. She was a freelancer working with the Associated Press (AP) who said she regularly reported from the hospital. Dagga has a 13-year-old-son, AP reports, who was evacuated from Gaza earlier in the war to live with his father in the United Arab Emirates.

Mohammad Salama

Mohammad Salama worked for Al Jazeera and Middle East Eye. Salama was planning his wedding to another journalist, Hala Asfour, with the pair hoping to wed after a ceasefire, according to Al Jazeera.

Ahmed Abu Aziz, 28, worked for Middle East Eye (MEE) and dreamed of studying abroad, according to its own reporting. The outlet says he worked as a freelancer based in Khan Younis. Engaged before the war, MEE says Abu Aziz married his fiancée lawyer Loucy Saleh last summer.

According to the outlet, he spoke recently about not having children “simply because I don’t have the strength to guarantee them a life”. MEE quoted Abu Aziz’s reflections on the dire conditions he and his wife found themselves in as he spoke candidly about their daily life battling hunger and displacement.

Moaz Abu Taha worked with various outlets, including the Israeli newspaper Haaretz just a fortnight ago filming a video call with journalists that showed children suffering from malnutrition at Nasser. Reuters said they occasionally published work by him.

Husam al-Masri

Israel does not allow international news organisations, including the BBC, into Gaza to report freely. Local reporters are relied upon to provide information to the world’s media agencies.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says more than 190 journalists have been killed in 22 months of war, the vast majority Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks.

Two weeks ago, Israel killed six journalists in a targeted attack on one of them near Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, drawing outrage.

What does Israel say?

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) initially confirmed it carried out a strike in the area of Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza.

Throughout the day, Israeli officials issued multiple statements with little information in them, indicating a lack of clarity within the military about the attack but designed to address widespread outrage.

On Monday evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel “deeply regrets the tragic mishap that occurred today at the Nasser Hospital in Gaza”, adding that Israel “values the work of journalists, medical staff, and all civilians” and saying the military was conducting a “thorough investigation”.

However, the statement does little to address the apparent “double-tap” nature of the attack. The fact that most of those who were killed were struck by the second attack at precisely the same location around 10 minutes later appears clearly intentional.

“Double taps” are a controversial military tactic that are designed to maximise casualties by firing on those who respond to the scene of a first attack.

Statements from media organisations, including the Foreign Press Association in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, accused the Israeli military of a pattern of intentionally targeting journalists throughout the war.

It is unclear if and when Israel will publish results of the internal inquiry it says it has begun.

Wider reaction to the killings

UN Secretary General António Guterres strongly condemned the “horrific killings” at Nasser hospital, which he said “highlight the extreme risks that medical personnel and journalists face as they carry out their vital work amid this brutal conflict”, and called for a “prompt, and impartial investigation”.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said he was “horrified” and called for an immediate ceasefire.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the strikes “intolerable” and said civilians and journalists must be protected. He renewed the call for humanitarian aid to be allowed inside Gaza and for Israel “to respect international law”.

Germany’s foreign office said it was “shocked”.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he was unaware of the strikes, but when asked for his reaction he said he was “not happy about it”.

Media freedom groups also issued condemnation.

“When and where is it going to end? There is international law,” said the head of Reporters without Borders Thibaut Bruttin.

“There are guarantees that should be granted to journalists covering conflicts, and none of that seems to be applying.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists said: “Israel’s broadcasted killing of journalists in Gaza continues while the world watches and fails to act firmly”.

The Foreign Press Association said the latest killings must serve as a “watershed moment” and urged international leaders to act. It called on Israel to “halt its abhorrent practice of targeting journalists”, adding that “too many journalists have been killed by Israel without justification”.

Nearly 2,000 cases of 7Up recalled over 'No Sugar' mix-up

0

Nearly 2,000 cases of 7Up have been recalled after some cans labeled as “zero sugar” were found to contain full-sugar soda.

Buffalo Rock Company, a beverage bottling company based in Alabama, initiated a recall of certain cases of 7Up Tropical on July 31, according to an enforcement report published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The packages may have contained cans of soda labeled as 7Up Tropical Zero sugar, despite containing the full-sugar version of 7Up Tropical.

The recalled cases can be identified by the lot numbers XXXXBR062156 and XXXXBR062256, and by the use-by date of March 23, 2026, which is printed on the packaging.

“The safety and quality of our products is our top priority,” a spokesperson for Keurig Dr Pepper Inc, which owns the 7Up brand, told Nexstar in an emailed statement. “In line with that commitment, we’re working with one of our bottlers, Buffalo Rock Company, on a voluntary recall of 1,954 cases of 7Up Tropical Regular Sugar.”

The spokesperson said only the 7Up Tropical variety produced by this single bottler is affected by the recall.

The affected products had been shipped to retailers in Alabama and Florida, according to Keurig Dr Pepper. The FDA’s enforcement report also included Georgia in the “distribution pattern,” but a rep for Keurig Dr Pepper told Nexstar that “no product” was distributed to Georgia.

The recall is currently categorized as Class II by the FDA, meaning that use of the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” The spokesperson for Keurig Dr Pepper did disclose whether any adverse reactions linked to the mix-up had been reported.

“Consumers are encouraged to contact the Keurig Dr Pepper Consumer Care team (866-824-1711) with any questions or concerns,” the spokesperson said.
