Kimmel returns to television to mock FCC Chair Brendan Carr

0

Jimmy Kimmel made a triumphant return to television (in most, but not all, cities) on Tuesday night, devoting his monologue to his short but shocking removal from the air. The comedian tackled the uproar head-on, directly naming Brendan Carr, the Federal Communications Commission Chair who had instigated Kimmel’s censorship. In a later segment, he took aim at Carr in a sketch where Robert De Niro played an unnamed FCC Chair occupying Carr’s office.

In his opening remarks, Kimmel impressed upon the value of free speech, saying that he had met comedians and talk show hosts from totalitarian countries who had told him that they could “get thrown in prison for making fun of those in power.” The freedom of speech, Kimmel said, was “something I’m embarrassed to say I took for granted until they pulled my friend Stephen [Colbert] off the air and tried to coerce the affiliates who run our show in the cities that you live in to take my show off the air. That’s not legal. That’s not American. That is un-American and it is so dangerous.”

“Should the government be allowed to regulate which podcasts the cell phone companies and Wi-Fi providers are allowed to let you download?”

Kimmel also took aim at the broad authority that Carr has claimed through the FCC by making an analogy to non-traditional media. “Should the government be allowed to regulate which podcasts the cell phone companies and Wi-Fi providers are allowed to let you download, to make sure they serve the public interest?” he asked rhetorically.

“10 years ago, this sounded crazy,” said Kimmel. “Brendan Carr, the chairman of the FCC, telling an American company, ‘We can do this the easy way or the hard way,’ and that ‘These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.’”

“In addition to being a direct violation of the First Amendment, it’s not a particularly intelligent threat to make in public,” Kimmel said. “Ted Cruz said he sounded like a mafioso. Although, I don’t know. If you want to hear a mob boss make a threat like that, you have to hide a microphone in a deli and park outside in a van with a tape recorder all night long. This genius said it on a podcast.”

Kimmel thanked his viewers for protesting, as well as various comedians and talk show hosts who had reached out to support him during his suspension. He also thanked right-wing commentators and politicians who he said had gone out of their way to criticize Kimmel’s censorship despite having opposing viewpoints, specifically naming Ben Shapiro, Candace Owens, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), and others. He also emotionally praised Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika, for her “selfless act of grace” in forgiving the shooter who had killed her husband.

“Maybe the silver lining from this is we found one thing we can agree on and maybe we’ll even find another one. Maybe we can get a little bit closer together. We do agree on a lot of things,” said Kimmel, before going on to cheekily list a series of politicized topics. “We agree on keeping our children safe from guns, on reproductive rights for women, social security, affordable health care, pediatric cancer research. These are all things that most Americans support.” The audience, which had responded loudly and enthusiastically throughout the monologue, did not appear to understand this joke.

Kimmel very briefly took aim at the Disney Corporation with another joke. “A lot of people have been asking me if there are conditions for my return to the air, and there is one. Disney has asked me to read the following statement, and, uh I’ve agreed to do it,” he said, before taking out a piece of paper from inside his jacket and pretending to read aloud, “‘To reactivate your Disney Plus and Hulu account, open the Disney Plus app on your smart TV or TV connected device.’”

“The president of the United States made it very clear he wants to see me and the hundreds of people who work here fired from our jobs.”

But he then went on to thank Disney for bringing him back on the air because “unfortunately and I think unjustly, this puts them at risk. The president of the United States made it very clear he wants to see me and the hundreds of people who work here fired from our jobs. Our leader celebrates Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke. He was somehow able to squeeze Colbert out of CBS. Then he turned his sights on me and now he’s openly rooting for NBC to fire Jimmy Fallon and Seth Myers and the hundreds of Americans who work for their shows who don’t make millions of dollars. And I hope that if that happens or if there’s even any hint of that happening, you will be 10 times as loud as you were this week. We have to speak out against this because he’s not stopping.”

“And it’s not just comedy,” Kimmel went on to say, even as his studio audience’s applause made him mostly inaudible. “He’s gunning for our journalists, too,” he said, explaining a new Pentagon press policy in the works. “They want to pick and choose what the news is. I know that’s not as interesting as muzzling a comedian, but it’s so important to have a free press, and it is nuts that we aren’t paying more attention to it.”

After the first commercial break, the show returned with an “interview” with “Brendan Carr,” from FCC headquarters in Washington. But instead of the actual Carr, Kimmel “interviewed” Robert De Niro playing an unnamed mafioso who was now the head of the FCC, having been appointed by “Sir Trump” to make menacing phone calls to the likes of Whoopi Goldberg and more.

“Maybe you’re the wrong guy to talk to, but it seems like the FCC is using mob tactics to suppress free speech,” said Kimmel in the sketch.

“What [BLEEP] did you just say to me?” De Niro replied in character.

“I didn’t mean any offense,” Kimmel replied nervously. “You know, you can’t curse or will get fined by the FCC.”

“I am the [BLEEP] FCC,” said De Niro. “I can [BLEEP] say whatever the [BLEEP] I want.” The faux FCC Chair then made a series of comical threats, pressuring Kimmel not to criticize or mock President Trump. Speech that referred to Trump’s “beautiful thick yellow hair” was free, but “if you want to do a joke like he’s so fat he needs two seats on the Epstein jet” Kimmel would have to lose “a couple fingers, maybe a tooth.”

De Niro closed the sketch saying, “Good luck with you. And I’ll be watching you, Kimmel. Maybe not on ABC. That’s up to you.”

WNBA semifinals: Game 2 winners, highlights, analysis

0

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Lynx looked as ife they were cruising to a comfortable victory.

Enter the Phoenix Mercury.

The No. 6 seed Mercury overcame a 20-point deficit to upend the top-seeded Lynx 89-83 in overtime. Per ESPN Research, it was only the second 20-point rally on the road in WNBA playoff history.

The series shifts to Phoenix for Game 3 on Friday (9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

How did the Mercury do it? Are the Lynx still the favorite in the series? ESPN breaks down everything we saw in Game 2 on Tuesday.

MORE: Schedule | Coaching carousel | Offseason guide

Final: Phoenix 89, Minnesota 83 OT

What the win means for Phoenix

They say a series doesn’t start until the home team loses. If that’s the case, the semifinals between the Mercury and Lynx have officially begun — and in epic fashion. Phoenix became only the fifth team in WNBA playoff history to come back from a 20-point deficit. And now the series is tied 1-1.

Before tipoff Tuesday, Phoenix coach Nate Tibbetts said the opening game of the series always has a feeling-out period. And while that seemed to continue a bit into Game 2, with the Mercury trailing by 16 at halftime, the team’s grit to fight back shows just how scary it can be. Phoenix finally found its 3-point shot, knocking down 13 from beyond the arc, while also staying strong in the paint. Alyssa Thomas‘ 13 assists (to go with 19 points) are the most by a Mercury player in a playoff game.

This was as close to a must-win game as it gets for a team that wasn’t facing elimination. And now, the Mercury get to return to the desert with a chance to win a pair of home games.

What the loss means for Minnesota

In many games this year, Minnesota elevated its game as it came out of the locker room after halftime. But there was no magic in the second half Tuesday.

Now the Lynx head to Phoenix and must try to regain their edge. At 14-8, the Lynx were tied for the best road record during the regular season. Being away from home doesn’t typically seem to flap their confidence. That has to be the case in Game 3.

Satou Sabally’s and-1 ties the score for Phoenix

Satou Sabally muscles to the rack for a tough and-1 to tie the score for the Mercury.

Whose bench will step up?

Phoenix’s bench outscored Minnesota’s reserves 22-3 on Tuesday, a big part of its monstrous comeback. Only Jessica Shepard scored off the bench for Minnesota. In Game 1, the Lynx’s second unit had the edge.

So far, all of the stars in this series have done what is expected of them. Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride have been high-volume scorers. Thomas and Satou Sabally have dominated. So, contributions from others might define this series.

On Tuesday, Sami Whitcomb scored 13 points for Phoenix — including a 3-pointer that tied the score and sent the game to overtime. Kathryn Westbeld added eight points and DeWanna Bonner had four. In the first game of the series, Minnesota’s Maria Kliundikova and Natisha Hiedeman were elite closers. These contributions could be what shifts Game 3 and the series. — Kendra Andrews

Should the Lynx still be favored now that Phoenix has home court in the series?

I think so. As much credit as the Mercury deserve for their resiliency in one of the biggest comebacks in WNBA playoff history, this was really a “make or miss league” game, to use a phrase popularized by longtime NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy.

Minnesota’s 7-of-28 3-point shooting (25%) was the team’s worst of the playoffs thus far, and the Lynx were only less accurate in four of their 44 games in the regular season. Meanwhile, Phoenix shot better than 40% from beyond the arc, including 9-of-21 (43%) after halftime. In a game that went to overtime, that shotmaking was the difference, and there’s no reason to expect it to carry over.

At the same time, the Mercury have to feel great about earning a split on the road given their tight turnaround from the first round. Game 2 also might have showed where the Lynx miss injured guard DiJonai Carrington. Four of the five Minnesota starters logged more than 36 minutes, including Bridget Carleton topping 40 minutes for only the second time in her career and Kayla McBride playing 42.

That fatigue might have caught up with the Lynx down the stretch and in overtime. It’s up to coach Cheryl Reeve to find a way to rest her perimeter players without Carrington, who is out for the season. — Kevin Pelton

2026 March Madness men’s field predictions

RULES

ESPN’s Bracketology efforts are focused on projecting the NCAA tournament field just as we expect the NCAA Division I basketball committee to select the field in March. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi uses the same data points favored by the committee, including strength of schedule and other season-long indicators, including the NET and team-sheet data similar to what is available to the NCAA, in his projections of the field. Visit the NCAA’s website for a fuller understanding of NCAA selection criteria.

68-Team Bracket

The 68-team bracket is the standard version of the NCAA tournament field that has been in place since 2011. If the 2021 field is comprised of 68 teams, there will be some key differences to past years, however.

The primary adjustment from a normal year is, of course, the playing of the entire NCAA tournament at a single site. This eliminates the need for geographical considerations in seeding. Additionally, there will be at least one fewer automatic qualifier this season, as the Ivy League’s decision to forgo the 2020-21 season reduces the number of AQ entries to 31 for this season.

48-Team Bracket

In this projection, a condensed selection process would reduce the field by 10 at-large teams and 10 automatic qualifiers (the latter of which still receive a revenue unit). The top four seeds in each region would receive a bye into the second round, with four first-round games per region – 5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10 and 8 vs. 9 – being played without fans on the higher seed’s home court.

To minimize travel, first-round pairings will be guided by geography to the greatest extent possible. And the reduced field results in only 32 teams competing at the central site. All participants must post a minimum .500 conference record – the “Lunardi Rule” – for at-large consideration.

16-Team Bracket

In this projection, the committee selects and seeds the 16 best available teams. There are no automatic qualifiers, although all non-competing conference champions receive the designated revenue unit.

To maintain some sense of national balance, conference participation is capped at four teams. And no region shall have more than one team from the same conference.

Modern Family Stars Then, Now

Listen up, fam!

Sixteen years ago, on Sept. 23, 2009, Modern Family premiered on ABC. And after watching the Dunphy-Pritchett-Tucker crew go through life’s ups and downs for 11 seasons, fans still enjoy keeping up with the cast’s major milestones off-camera.

Earlier this month, for instance, Eric Stonestreet celebrated not just turning 54 but also tying the knot with Lindsay Schweitzer.

“It’s my birthday and guess what I got,” the actor, who played Cam Tucker on the sitcom, wrote on Instagram Sept. 9. “I got married!”

Of course, his onscreen husband Jesse Tyler Ferguson was thrilled about the news.

“Of all the second marriages, this one is my favorite!” the 49-year-old, who portrayed Mitchell Pritchett, commented. “I love you both! I’m so happy for you!!!!”

And their TV daughter is doing big things too—changing her name from Aubrey Anderson-Emmons to Frances Anderson as she grows her career as a musician.

“Frances is actually part of my legal name,” the 18-year-old, who played Lily on Modern Family, explained to E! News last month. “It’s my middle name, and it’s after my mom’s old family friend. I thought Frances, one, it was a bit shorter than Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. I do have a long, hyphenated last name. But I wanted to switch it up, and I wanted people to see a new side of me, and I wanted to create a space specifically just for music.”

A first look at Kojima’s OD Xbox game

0

Hideo Kojima first announced he was teaming up with Xbox for a new game in 2022, before a teaser revealed the OD name and some cast last year. We’re now getting a better look at exactly what OD is, in a new three-minute teaser trailer that holds true to Kojima’s promise that the game will be unique and immersive.

The trailer begins with Sophia Lillis’ character opening a red door, and then lighting candles — some of which look like Death Stranding babies. With rain pouring down outside and mysterious knocking sounds, it’s clear OD will very much lean into horror for its gameplay as Lillis’ character shakes in fear.

The trailer also shows off some of the early Unreal Engine work that Kojima Productions is undertaking for OD, alongside Microsoft’s assistance. Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirmed on stage at Kojima Productions’ 10th Anniversary livestream that development of the game is “well underway,” and that Microsoft is helping with the visuals and technical work.

OD is bold, it’s unique, and it’s unmistakably from this studio,“ says Spencer. ”We’re deeply supporting the production, it’s our technical work on Unreal that we’re doing with the team, both with the flashy [elements] you see on the screen, but also a lot of the behind the scenes work.”

OD is billed as something of a cross between a game and a movie, with a promise of exploring concepts that test “your fear threshold.” Unreal Engine will drive the experience of OD, instead of the Sony-owned Decima engine that powers both Death Stranding titles. Kojima had high praise for Unreal Engine at the 10th anniversary event, saying “the technology is one step higher than Death Stranding 2.”

While we know Jordan Peele is somehow involved in OD, Kojima did note today that the filmmaker is working on another part of the overall OD experience. That might be why the game is subtitled OD Knock, to differentiate it from whatever Peele is working on.

We still don’t know exactly when OD will arrive, despite promises that development is well underway. “Kojima is innovating in gameplay, story, and player engagement,” says Spencer. “We’re collaborating closely, and we’re very excited for what’s next.”

Falcons fire WR coach Ike Hilliard after offensive struggles

0

The Atlanta Falcons fired wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard, one day after being routed by their NFC South rivals the Carolina Panthers, the team announced Monday.

Offensive passing game coordinator T.J. Yates will assume Hilliard’s duties, per the team.

The Panthers blew out the Falcons 30-0 on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was Carolina’s widest margin of victory in a decade.

The Falcons’ offense sputtered in the disastrous performance, never making it into the red zone. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had the worst game of his young career, throwing two interceptions, including a backbreaking pick-six.

Penix has not thrown a touchdown pass to a wide receiver or tight end this season. His lone touchdown pass came to running back Bijan Robinson on a checkdown that Robinson took 50 yards in Week 1. Atlanta has just one touchdown over its last eight quarters.

Hilliard, 49, was in his second season with the Falcons. He previously was the wide receivers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington and Buffalo Bills.

Yates, 38, has been with the Falcons since 2021. A former NFL quarterback, he was the team’s wide receivers coach in 2022 and 2023 before becoming quarterbacks coach last season.

NWSL Power Rankings: Marta’s Orlando Pride in nine-game rut

0

It’s Monday, and another round of NWSL action is in the books, which means it’s time for ESPN’s Power Rankings.

Who’s climbing the table? Who’s in free fall? Our writers studied the action from across Matchday 21 to come up with this week’s order of all 14 teams in the league. Let’s dive in.

Previous ranking: 1
Next match: Friday Sept. 26 vs. Chicago Stars, 8 p.m. ET

This is Kansas City’s season, and we’re just living in it. After beating Seattle 2-0 on Saturday, the Current are the fastest-ever team to collect the NWSL Shield based on the number of games left to play. Fittingly, Temwa Chawinga celebrated her birthday by scoring her 13th goal of the season in the win, bringing her level with Esther González at the top of the scoring charts once again. Vlatko Andonovski’s side now have 17 wins, two draws and two losses from 21 games played, and show no signs of slowing down ahead of the postseason.

Previous ranking: 2
Next match: Sunday Sept. 28 vs. Houston Dash, 1 p.m. ET

Playing on a rare Thursday night without midfielder Hal Hershfelt (who was serving a red card suspension), the Spirit traded goals with Angel City and walked away with a 2-2 draw in California. Trinity Rodman broke through first, following up her own blocked penalty for her third goal in three games. Croix Bethune followed in the second half to clinch a point after the Spirit had fallen behind, as both players hit a hot stride of form ahead of the postseason after working back from injuries earlier in the year. The Spirit are now undefeated in nine-straight NWSL games, though six of those games have been draws.

Previous ranking: 3
Next match: Friday Sept. 26 vs. Portland Thorns, 8 p.m. ET

After scoring her first goal of the season two weeks ago, Rose Lavelle got back on the scoresheet in Gotham’s 1-1 draw in California Sunday evening. That’s two goals in 11 games played for the United States midfielder who was sidelined with injury earlier in the year. After three straight games on the road (including the Concacaf W Champions Cup midweek) Gotham heads home to face Portland next, as they prepare to finish off their season against a string of playoff contenders.

Previous ranking: 4
Next match: Friday Sept. 26 vs. Orlando Pride, 10.30 p.m. ET

They outproduced the hosts, especially early in the game, but failed to get more than a point in Portland as Mackenzie Arnold‘s six saves limited their attack. After suffering three defeats in four games, a 1-1 draw against Portland in Oregon isn’t the worst result for San Diego. But they haven’t won a game since Aug. 16, and every point counts as only five points separate them from teams outside the playoff positions. The Wave play the also-struggling (even more so) Orlando Pride next weekend, who’ve gone nine games since their last victory.

Previous ranking: 7
Next match: Friday Sept. 26 vs. Gotham FC, 8 p.m. ET

Reyna Reyes scored her third goal of the year in the 86th minute to steal a point at home against San Diego. They struggled to get shots off early, with Olivia Moultrie‘s 33rd minute free kick their first clocked shot, though they did get three on target by the end of the game. At the other end, Matildas keeper Arnold made six saves and was key to keeping San Diego to one goal before Reyes’ late equalizer. After Saturday’s 1-1 draw, the fourth-place Thorns finished the weekend still even on points and resting just above San Diego in the table.

Previous ranking: 8
Next match: Sunday Sept. 28 vs. Washington Spirit, 1 p.m. ET

Yazmeen Ryan‘s team-leading fourth goal of the season came in the 28th minute against Chicago and was enough to seal a 1-0 victory in Texas. One week after losing to the Utah Royals, they’re back in the win column and sitting just below the playoff positions, but they’ve got a tough test next weekend against the Washington Spirit.

Previous ranking: 5
Next match: Friday Sept. 26 vs. San Diego Wave, 10.30 p.m. ET

Orlando Pride have stretched their winless rut to a calamitous nine straight games after losing 1-0 to the North Carolina Courage on Friday. The defeat arrived in the 89th minute, as the Courage pounced on a rebound in front of goal. The Pride are still in the playoff positions but are desperate for a win as they sink down to seventh place after holding second earlier in the season.

Previous ranking: 6
Next match: Saturday Sept. 27 vs. Angel City FC, 7.30 p.m. ET

With five games to go, Louisville’s form has hit a lull. After losing to Seattle in their rescheduled match from last weekend, they lost 3-2 to Utah this weekend, marking their third loss in three games amid a four-game winless run. With time dwindling, they seem remarkably on track for a fifth-straight ninth-place finish, potentially carrying forward a curse of finishing each season just short of the playoffs. Their postseason hopes are far from over, but they’ve got pivotal tests before them, with Angel City waiting first next weekend.

North Carolina has had hard times this season. They recently went on a six-game winless run, sacked their coach, and lost Jaedyn Shaw to Gotham. But they beat the reigning champs 1-0 on Friday with a goal from 20-year-old Japanese midfielder Shinomi Koyama (her first for the team) to mark two wins in two games, finishing the weekend just inside the playoff positions.

Earlier in the week, Seattle beat Racing Louisville 1-0 in their rescheduled match thanks to a 90th minute goal from Jess Fishlock. But they fell 2-0 to Kansas City on the weekend (despite a six-save performance from Claudia Dickey). Losing to Kansas City is understandable — the Shield winners have only lost twice this season and clinched the Shield in record-time with Saturday’s victory against the Reign. Seattle are still in a respectable sixth place as they prepare for eighth-place North Carolina next weekend.

After falling behind early thanks to Rodman’s rebound goal, Angel City fought back to briefly lead 2-1, before settling for a 2-2 draw in California. Gisele Thompson set up Evelyn Shores for the first, marking her team-leading fifth assist of the season. Thompson’s six goal contributions are second only to her sister, who recently signed for Chelsea, and team top-scorer Riley Tiernan. ACFC goalkeeper Angelina Anderson was also immense in the draw, making eight saves to stymie the Spirit advance. They finished the weekend in 11th place and will need to battle to break into the playoffs (there’s a four-point gap between them and eighth-place North Carolina), but postseason possibility remains intact.

After spending most of the season at the bottom of the table, Utah beat Racing Louisville 3-2 to finish the weekend ahead of the Chicago Stars in 13th place. Their momentum is more impressive than their ranking: with the victory, the Royals are six games undefeated with three wins and three draws, including three victories from their last four games.

They still haven’t won a game since June 7 (four draws, six defeats in that run). But Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Gotham was a respectable result, as Racheal Kundananji‘s fourth goal of the season and second in as many games brought them back from behind in California.

Alyssa Naeher can be trusted to unfurl memorable penalty heroics, and she did just that against Houston as she denied Dash forward Ryan from the spot as part of a five-save performance in Texas. Unfortunately, Naeher’s steady hands weren’t enough to collect any points in a 1-0 defeat to the Dash.

Lest you think Coulier came up with his “Cut. It. Out” catchphrase by himself, or had it written for him in the Full House writer’s room, the comedian has admitted that he lifted it wholesale from a pal.

During his time as a comedy duo with friend Mark Cendrowski prior to the show, it was Cendrowski who, while playing a suave character, would tell women in the audience, “You’re in love with me, now cut. It. Out.”

As Coulier revealed to Buzzfeed back in 2014, “I told him, ‘I’m going to steal that. I’m going to use that someday.’ And he said, ‘Ah, you can’t steal that.’ So I starred on a show on Nickelodeon called Out of Control and it became my hook on the show. And when Full House started, I just brought it over and it stuck.”
