Trump says Canada will drop USMCA-compliant retaliatory tariffs

0

President Trump said he spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who told him he would remove some of the retaliatory tariffs against the United States and calm trade tensions between the neighboring nations.

“He’s removing his tariffs, yeah, he’s removing his retaliatory tariffs, which I thought was nice. And we’re going to have another call soon. Yeah, we had a very good call,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

“I like him,” he added, arguing that Canada and Mexico “take a lot of our business” that is now returning to the U.S. because of his tariffs plan.

Carney announced on Friday that he will remove the 25 percent counter-tariffs placed on U.S. goods that are in compliance with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which have been in place since March, CNBC reported. The new tariff rate on U.S. goods will go into effect Sept. 1.

Trump praised Carney for dropping some tariffs.

“It’s impossible, I think, for another country to stop it and we are working on something. We want to be very good to Canada. I like Carney a lot, I think he’s a good, good person. And we had a very good talk yesterday so I think it will be good,” Trump said.

Canada will keep 25 percent tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles from the U.S., which are all sectors that Trump has imposed tariffs on. Carney has suggested the move to remove some tariffs is part of preparing for talks to review the USMCA trade agreement, Bloomberg reported.

Trump has hit Canada with a 35 percent tariff, citing frustrations with the flow of fentanyl across the U.S. border. But, goods that are covered by USMCA, which Trump signed in 2020, are exempt from tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

Donald Trump announces 2026 Fifa World Cup draw to take place at Washington’s Kennedy Center

0

The draw for the 2026 men’s World Cup will take place in Washington this December, US President Donald Trump has announced.

The tournament will take place across the United States, Canada and Mexico and will feature 48 nations – up from 32.

The draw had been expected to be held in Las Vegas, which is where it was completed when the US hosted the 1994 tournament.

However, the draw, on 5 December, will instead go ahead at the Kennedy Center – the performing arts venue where Trump is chairman.

“It’s the biggest, probably the biggest event in sports,” Trump said.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino, who brought with him the World Cup trophy, also took part in the draw announcement from the Oval Office at the White House.

“The draw will be broadcast live all over the world and will be watched by one billion viewers,” Infantino said.

“It will be 48 participating teams. There will be 104 matches – 104 Super Bowls!”

Infantino offered Trump the opportunity to hold the trophy during the news conference on Friday. “Can I keep it?” Trump asked.

Almost half of Californians support Newsom's redistricting move: Poll

0

Nearly half of California voters support Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)’s push to create more safe Democratic congressional seats before the midterm election, a new poll found, but support hasn’t crossed the crucial 50 percent threshold and many voters remain undecided.

About 48 percent of voters surveyed in the University of California Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) poll said they would vote in favor of allowing lawmakers to toss independently drawn congressional maps and use new partisan maps for 2026, while 32 percent would vote against it. About 20 percent said they were undecided.

The vote on the measure, dubbed Proposition 50, is scheduled to take place Nov. 4.

“I think it’s pretty good news for the governor,” IGS Director Mark DiCamillo told The Hill on Friday.

DiCamillo said such polls would typically need 50 percent as a baseline entry point because undecided voters often skew to “no” votes, but the uncertainty over the rapidly emerging issue made it less surprising that it started below that level.

However, he cautioned it won’t be an easy pitch as campaigns gear up on both sides.

“It’s going to be a heavy lift,” he said. “You have to get comfortably above 50 percent.”

Voters were surveyed before California’s Democratic-controlled Legislature this week approved the plan to redraw lines, teeing up the special election, but after Newsom had already put forth the idea as a way to counter efforts in Texas and other Republican-led states to create more GOP seats in the House.

Each state sets its own process for drawing congressional maps. While some leave decisions to lawmakers, California relies on an independent redistricting commission that redraws its maps every decade after new census data is released.

California lawmakers moved ahead with the plan to temporarily move away from the independent maps after Texas Republicans closed in on their plan for new maps, with final approval expected Friday.

“We’re responding to what occurred in Texas — we’re neutralizing what occurred and we’re giving the American people a fair chance,” Newsom said at a news conference this week. “Because when all things are equal, and we’re all playing by the same set of rules, there’s no question the Republican Party will be the minority party in the House of Representatives next year.”

DiCamillo said the uncertainty of the ballot measure at the time the poll was conducted earlier this month limited analysis about who would be likely to vote in the special election.

“It’s not something that it affects their daily lives,” he said. “It’s more of a process issue.”

He said opponents of the redistricting overhaul have solid messaging in that voters have long lauded the independent nature of California’s mapmaking.

“There are many ways they can appeal to voters,” he said, noting he had recently received a mailer against Prop 50 that touted past comments from nonpartisan voting rights groups.

Respondents who were considered regular voters — those who cast ballots in at least five of the seven most recent statewide elections — were more likely to say they support the measure, at 55 percent in favor to 34 percent against, though, DiCamillo noted.

The poll also found Newsom’s overall favorability among California voters has gone up as he’s centered himself in Democrats’ efforts to challenge President Trump.

About 51 percent of the state’s voters now approve of Newsom’s performance overall, while 43 percent disapprove, based on the poll’s findings.

“People want him to take on President Trump,” DiCamillo said. “Most think this is a role he should be playing and it’s improving his overall ratings.”

The IGS poll surveyed 4,950 California voters in English and Spanish from Aug. 11-17. The margin of error is 1.5 percentage points.

Dow Hits Record Highs, Small Caps Soar On Powell’s Shift: What’s Moving Markets Friday?

0

A strong rally erupted on Friday on Wall Street shortly after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell delivered a notably dovish message during his highly anticipated speech at Jackson Hole.

Powell said the Fed is prepared to adjust its policy stance—a clear nod to potential interest rate cuts—in response to the sharp cooling in the labor market.

He also adopted a more tolerant tone on inflation risks stemming from trade tariffs, saying the Fed’s base case assumes these would result in one-off price increases, not a sustained inflation surge.

It was party time for markets. Every sector in the S&P 500 closed in the green, with consumer discretionary, real estate, industrials and materials each rising more than 2%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 2%, breaking to new all-time highs above 45,680. The S&P 500 gained 1.4%, closing at 6,460 and flirting with record territory near 4,680, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.4%, snapping a three-day losing streak.

But the true stars of the day were small caps. The Russell 2000 Index soared nearly 4%, logging its best session since April 9 and climbing back to levels last seen in December 2024.

Regional banks, tracked by the SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:KRE)—the largest sector within the index—jumped nearly 5%. In currencies, the U.S. dollar fell 0.9%, while short-dated Treasury yields collapsed, with the 2-year note dropping 10 basis points to 3.70%.

Commodities rallied as well: gold climbed 1%, and silver surged 2.2%. But the most explosive gains came from crypto markets.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) soared 3.5% to $116,000, while Solana (CRYTPO: SOL), Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) and Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) rallied 9%, 10%, and 12%, respectively—turning a bullish day into a crypto-fueled frenzy.

Nottingham Forest: Nuno Espirito Santo’s future as manager is uncertain

0

Nuno Espirito Santo’s future as Nottingham Forest manager is uncertain after a breakdown in his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Sources have told BBC Sport that Nuno’s position is not completely safe despite last season’s achievement of qualifying for Europe, and their win over Brentford in the first round of matches in this season’s Premier League on Sunday.

The uncertainty, according to sources, has now stretched to the playing squad, who are said to be aware of the situation.

On Friday, 51-year-old Nuno said “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” amid rumours about his job.

“I always had a very good relationship with the owner – last season we were very close and spoke on a daily basis,” he added.

“This season it is not so well [between us], but I always believe that dialogue is important because my concern is the squad and the season we have ahead of us. Our relationship has changed and we are not as close.”

When asked if it was good that his relationship with Marinakis had changed, Nuno said: “No, it is not good. I think everybody at the club should be together but this is not the reality.”

Forest have been active in the transfer market this summer, signing seven players – although they did sell winger Anthony Elanga to Newcastle for £55m.

But before last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Brentford, Nuno outlined his transfer concerns.

“We have doubts, who is going to be [here], when are they [new signings] going to come? All these things create doubts,” he said.

“Not only me but in the club. What we want is game-by-game to have as many options as possible. Europe will come after, and for sure it will be better, but for now until that happens it is a major concern.

“The owner is aware, the club is aware, everyone is aware. Everybody knows the reality. This is a lost chance that we had as a group to do it.”

There have been suggestions Nuno has not been fully involved in the club’s recruitment this summer, which could be a factor in the deterioration of his relationship with Marinakis.

Spanish-language reporter detained by Trump administration sues for release

0

A Spanish-language reporter who was detained earlier this year has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration alleging he’s being held in custody in violation of the Constitution.

Mario Guevara, 47, was arrested by police near Atlanta on June 14 while filming a “No Kings” protest — which sprung up in opposition to President Trump’s immigration agenda and summer military parade in Washington.

Guevara has a large following and frequently covers issues tied to immigration in the Peach State as the founder of MG News.

A judge in DeKalb County, Ga., dismissed his charges of unlawful assembly, obstruction of police and being a pedestrian on or along the roadway on June 25, but Guevara remains in federal custody.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Guevara is in the country illegally while his lawyers say he is authorized to work and remain in the U.S. Over the past two months, he’s been shuffled through three detention centers despite attempts to pay a bond set by the immigration judge.

Officials from U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) appealed the bond, which has resulted in a delay in Guevara’s release.

Local, regional and national press organizations have objected to his prolonged stay in custody by sending a letter to DHS last week urging Secretary Kristi Noem to release him on bond without delay.

“Every day Mario Guevara remains in federal custody is another day the government sends a chilling message that our freedoms are no longer guaranteed but merely conditional in the United States,” said Nora Benavidez, Free Press’ senior counsel and director of digital justice and civil rights.

“His children now been without their father for two months; each of those days is time they cannot get back with him,” Benavidez continued. “If people like Mario Guevara are cast as dangerous, that says more about the kind of nation we are becoming than it does about who Mr. Guevara is.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Georgia has also weighed in.

“His detention on this basis is unlawful and sends a chilling message to other journalists, particularly non-citizen journalists, that they will also face retaliation if they report on public officials,” Scarlet Kim, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU said in a statement.

“We ask the court to reject this egregious suppression of protected press activity and order Mr. Guevara’s immediate release,” Kim added.

Bavarian Nordic boosts 2025 guidance as takeover offer looms

0

Bavarian Nordic has upped the bottom end of its 2025 guidance, buoyed by strong performance in the drugmaker’s travel health and public preparedness businesses.

Subject of a takeover offer by a consortium that values the company at around $3bn, the company posted total revenue for H1 of DKr3bn ($160m), reflecting a 33% compared to the same period last year.

A 24% growth in its travel health business, which includes a range of vaccines, contributed DKr1.4bn to the company’s books. Growth was fuelled by increased demand for rabies and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccines.

There was weaker revenue for the company’s cholera and typhoid vaccines, namely Vaxchora and Vivotif. Sales for the two products shrank 36% and 2%, respectively, in H1. In an earnings call on 22 August, chief financial officer Henrik Juuel blamed a declining US market for the performance.

Sales for Bavarian Nordic’s public preparedness business came in at DKr1.5bn, a 51% rise from H1 2024. Assessing growth in this area is harder due to the timing of vaccine orders – Bavarian Nordic said that quarterly phasing of orders drove the increase.

As a result of the strong performance in both the travel health business and clarity from the public preparedness business orders for the remainder of the year, Bavarian Nordic has upped the bottom end of its full-year revenue. The vaccine specialist now expects full-year revenue of DKr6bn to DKr6.6bn, compared to the previous range of DKr5.7-DKr6.7bn.

Bavarian Nordic bolstered its cash reserves with a $160m sale of a priority review voucher in June 2025. The company has now included this in the total EBITDA margin, which is expected to be 40%-42%.

The remainder of the year could hold significant change for Bavarian Nordic. The company, currently listed on the Copenhagen stock exchange, is subject to a takeover offer from a consortium led by Nordic Capital and Permira. The consortium is expected to publish an offer letter by 26 August, detailing further terms, though the bid values the vaccine maker at around DKr19bn.

The deal, which would take the company private, will only go through if it is approved by shareholders. The company’s board of directors have maintained that the takeover offer from Nordic Capital and Permira “represents an attractive offer for the shareholders”.

Alluding to the deal in the conference call, Juuel said the “comprehensive offer document” will answer a “lot of questions that we are being faced with”.

Bavarian Nordic has had a busy 2025 of commercial wins, spearheaded by approval for its chikungunya vaccine Vimkunya in the US, Europe, and the UK. The regulatory approval provides direct competition to Valneva’s Ixchiq, which, for a while, was the only chikungunya vaccine on the market.
